GEC and halfstops?

so im a traditional noobie and just got my first GEC a #48 northfield and holy cow I'm hooked

so my question is about half stops.. my northfield has them on both blades but a buddy has two GEC's and one knife has them but the other does not.

how do they determine what gets a half stop and what doesn't? is it pattern, blade size, brand?

sorry for the noob question just trying to figure my new addiction out

2Dead has a thread here which lists all the GECs for half-stops or without. Seems to be mostly traditional by pattern, but no hard & fast rules.
