I'm interested in the GEC Northfield #72 Lockback (Spearpoint). I can't decide if I should get Autumn Gold or Copperhead. Can anyone explain the difference? Any pictures of these colors would be appreciated. Also, would the 72 spearpoint make a good field dressing knife?

I think I would prefer a clip point for the task.

As far as the jigged bone... beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I'll just put up some photos.

Here's a photo of the autumn gold that I lifted from P. I don't think she'll mind. Every time I see this knife I want one.

Here's a photo of the Copperhead that I lifted from a dealer website (I figure I've spent enough at the store that I can lift their photos guilt free ;) ). The two are similar but the jig pattern is more random on the copperhead and there seem to be differences in color as well.

Understand "copperhead" on the new 42 is not at all the same pattern & color of what is on the 72s in copperhead. From the two you mention, I like the finer jig pattern of the autumn gold. Copperhead bone on the 72 is a larger jig pattern.

It's always a good sign when I'm scrolling down through, stop and go "ooooooh," and then realize it's my picture. ;)

Uh, complete with evidence that I do pocket my knives. Where'd that hair come from?!

What he said.

To the OP: Barring finding the knives in person, I hope you can see some pictures of the actual knives/covers that you're considering.

The only thing consistent about GEC's naming/jigging/bone coloration I've discovered so far is, one knife model's "autumn gold" (or any other cover name) is not necessarily another's-- probably won't be!-- and may or may not include the jigging pattern.

Big is right. I just looked up the 72 and both "copperhead" and "autumn" look a lot different than they do on the 68 and 42. You might want to check the photos on the dealer websites.

Ah, I did not realize the copperhead was exclusive to the 42 in that style. Darn.

And then there's the different Autumn Gold Jigging done on the #23, #68 and #72 compared to the #42 Copperhead Jig

The plot thickens...
Thanks to Jim for showing the differences in jigging pattern and color among different models.
Overall, there's no huge difference between the two colors. My vote (if it counts) goes for the copperhead though :)
