Just got mine and I really enjoy it. This is my first experience with micarta, and I couldn't help but notice these patches of white, flakey/dry looking stuff on the knives shield-side micarta. Is this normal? I tried oiling it and it looks better for a couple hours, then it dries out. How would I go about fixing I? (The flip side's edges are perfectly smooth.)

That's the canvas fibers. You could hand sand it till it's smooth.

BlockPsycho,
I would be careful what You put on the scales.
Hopefully, You didn't use too course of sandpaper.
You could try 4000 grit polishing paper.

That is what canvas micarta does, gets even more so as it gets older and you wear through the resin. The fibers do darken with oils from your hand. When you clean it they will lighten up again.

I think this made it even worse, it just kicked up even more of the fibers.
You have to go slowly and sand it to a very high polish for the fibers to go away. It's definitely doable, I'll take a picture of a Blind Horse Knives Woodsman Pro with polished Canvas Micarta I have later.

BlockPsycho,
What grit and type of sandpaper did You use, and how big of an area did You sand ?

Only have 150 grit. I just touched the very edge where it was frayed, but it seems to have caused it to become even more so. Should I just buy the 4000 and spend a while on it?

BlockPsycho,
This is just a thought, do You have a jewelers close by ?
They might be able to give it a polish on the edge with a hand held ( dremel type ) tool.
It might be a easy fix.
