GEC breakdown/mod questions. How to remove covers

What is the best method to remove the slabs from a GEC (bone, wood, Micarta etc) I have never disassembled a traditional style folder and am concerned about cracking or straight up breaking the covers if I try to remove them. Are the GEC rivets flared into the scales and renedered useless after removal or could I pop em back in? Looking to do a swap on some covers and any input is helpful.

After watching a few GEC videos I believe the pins are pressed in and handles finished afterwords. It would take some extreme care to get the handles off without damage. Having said that I've never actually done it myself...
Let's hope Glennbad or another member with more knowledge comes along before I give any more bad info out!

I've never removed covers on a traditional either, but every video I've ever seen about it involves cutting the pins. From a mechanical standpoint, I don't see how it would be possible to re-use a pin once it's been removed. The pins are peened on both sides, so you'd have to break them to remove. Peening new pins in doesn't appear to be all that difficult but I'm sure it takes a bit of practice and finesse. If I were you, I'd start with a Rough Rider or some other cheap knife.

One thing that I have seen many people do is take a utility knife/razor blade and place that where the liner meets the slab and baton that through the pins.

I would wait to hear from other on it for a better technique for it, or try it in an older project knife first.

tried it all, paring knife, exacto, you name it. made a mess of that 48. glennbadd is there for you tho :D
