I'm considering picking up one of the following soon and would love to hear from owners, particularly those who own both.

Thoughts, opinions, gripes? Side-by-side pics would also be great!

OK, sorry I don't have side by side pic's (it's a bit late here, can sort tomorrow:))

Thoughts... the Pony jack is a much smaller knife in the hand, similar in size to the #15 and the same frame shape as the #68 (I think). Still useful and very pocketeable. The #78 on the other hand is similar in size to the #72/3 frame by GEC. The pen is long and therefore more useful in my eyes. The springs are stronger on my #78 by some margin. Going by other people's comments on the #78 thread that's pretty standard. I personally like the springs like that, I found my #68 lacks snap, particularly on the pen.

My preference is with the #78 but I generally veer towards knives in the 3 3/4-4" bracket:)

Sam, you put it very well.

The 78 is quite a bit larger, even though only 1/4 inch longer, and the springs are strong. The 68 is more pocket friendly and easier to open, usually about mid range in tension.

I might add that the action on most stiff or slow GEC's can be improved by flushing/oiling the joint and just general use; they will usually loosen up and have better snap. Some are slower to react to this treatment than others, but a tight knife is better than one that is too loose.

Thanks, that does help. I won't be able to handle these before buying so your comparisons draw a good picture. I was leaning towards the 78 but I actually want something that is more pocket friendly. I've got a 72 Cody Scout and it is a tad big for loose pocket carry. My #15 Charlow is a great size so the 68 may be more what I'm looking for.

Here you go - 78 vs. 66 (same as 68 except serpentine).

Amazing what difference a 1/4" closed makes. Thanks!

I'm sure I'll eventually end up with both but I think I'll go with the 68 for now. Just gotta decide on handle material. Choices, choices...

Good thread and pic, thanks. I really like the #15 frame and will keep this in mind.
