GEC Cuban question

I'm a fan of mostly small and slender equal-end knives. And I nearly always prefer a spear point blade. The thought occurred to me though that I might appreciate something a bit bulkier from time-to-time, especially with my middle-aged eyes making it easier to appreciate larger items. Not only that, but the number of modern equal-end releases is extremely limited, forcing me to branch out.

So my 'quick' question, is the GEC Cuban Cigar (not the Castro) available in spear point? I briefly browsed a couple of websites this morning and can only find clip points.

I've still never seen a TC Barlow in spear at any dealer :( , but I have managed to score spear points in the Boy's Knife, Ben Hogan, and Pony.

Hi Bob,

I don't remember there being a #53 Cuban with spear blade but GEC did make #54s with spear blades. The difference between the #53 and #54 is the #53 does not have half stops while the #54 does. The #54s with spear have either a full size clip blade or a punch as the secondary. Here are 2 that are still available...

Thanks for the information.

The second photo is very attractive on account of the handles. although I'd certainly prefer a pen blade over a punch.

What attracts me to the Cubans is the secondary blade being a small pen blade; I like the idea of an oversized heavier-duty Senator pattern.

The one you linked is also a #54 with punch secondary. Here's a link to GEC's #54 gallery.

You are on a roll with the helpful links.
And thanks for the information on that #54 I linked. Since the secondary blade was closed, I really didn't know what it was. In fact when I first saw the picture it seemed to be a single-blade.

Following your link to the GEC website, I don't see any equal-end Cigars with a spear point and pen combination, or even any single-blade spears. So I'll assume for now that they never made any. Guess that answers my initial "quick" question.

I think you have a few choices.
1. Harness Jack
2. Moose
3. Big Jack - sorry for the blurry pick

Hi Bob,
A few questions.
Are you looking specifically for a GEC?
Are you looking for an equal end with blades on either side or for a 2 blade jack?

One Queen that comes to mind is their swell center. It's just shy of 4" with a spear and pen.
Here's a pic from the collectorknives website....

I've seen that Queen City, in fact I purchased the matching English Jack from them not long ago. Not a fan of swell centers, but based on the quality of that English Jack, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Queen City.

They have never made a single blade 53 / 54. So, as stated, a harness jack, moose, or big jack are probably going to be the options. Guess you could buy a harness jack and have someone jerk out the spring and punch.

I don't have one so I'm plucking the idea from thin air but, isn't the Northwoods Forest Jack based on the 53/54 frame?
