Hello everyone,

Just ordered a Orange Delrin LockBack. Can't wait to get it in (and upload pictures). What are your experiences with these? I absolutely LOVE this concept as I feel that this is truly what my grandfather and great-grandfather would have owned; meaning not spending the amount of money that us knife afficianados do on multiple knives, but just a simple, reliable tool that can be used without worry. So with that said, how do you like yours? Any pics?

The #99 hasn't gotten much press. The #71 is very popular, but the #47 Hayn' Helpers, the #65 fish knives, and the #99 lock backs haven't shown to be nearly as big of a hit for GEC. I love the #47 sheepsfoot - GEC answered my prayers for a sodbuster-like knife with a straight edge. I both a single and 2 blade #47 in orange (not at the same time) for a while, but have replaced both with a Nifebrite version because they're significantly thinner (plus I like things that glow).

I've been on the fence about getting a #99 in Nifebrite. All the traditional knives I own and have owned are slipjoints (no, I've never even owned a Buck 110/112), and something about the lock just doesn't jive with me. Plus the handles just look blocky. I'm sure it feels fine in the hand, but it just doesn't appeal to me visually. However, the blade looks great. I like the Bull Nose, but would prefer a pointier tip, which the #99 has. Maybe I'll try one out eventually, but there's a few other knives that are already earmarked for money I don't yet have, so it'll have to wait.

Here's a couple threads to check out.

Thanks for your thoughts and links! I will let you know how it works out. I think if you were to go against the slipjoint route the #99 may be your best bet (GEC, blade shape and price) though I will know once I get it and try it out.

I ordered one of the orange ones when they first came out a few months ago. It was my first GEC. (I've since added 10 others and I'm broke...). I lost a benchmade and a microtech, both with pocket clips, within 2 months of each other, carrying stuff on my farm, hence the choice of orange. No more pocket clips for me. Probably no more moderns either. I love these GEC traditionals. I carry the 99 the most. I really like the O1 steel, it's taking a nice natural patina. Good lockup, a very sturdy knife. Here is a picture with my crappy camera.

My Bullnose (AKA small sodbuster) is always in my pocket; the 02 steel is awesome. The quality is so far above any sodbuster I have encountered.

I have a Bullnose.... definitely my favorite of the bunch. I like Sodbusters in general and a drop point to boot. While I love the Case Yellow CV Sodbuster Jrs, the Bullnose has a slightly more comfortable handle, better F&F, lanyard tube and I like the Color a little better.

I would like to get a sheepsfoot version of the Hayin Helper... and maybe the Jack version. I would probably like the Hawkbill too.

The Fish knife is somewhat interesting, but the blocky handle throws me off.... same for the 99, it has the most blocky shaped handle.

That's too bad. If they're not successful sellers GEC won't likely make anymore. I'd love to get a Nifebrite single blade sheepsfoot Hay'n Helper, but they are nowhere to be found. Like many GECs you gotta strike while the iron is hot. I know that there are other variations are available, but that's the only one I want. I'm kind of particular like that. :D

I like mine, the O1 takes a screamin edge and it's easy to see ( i got orange). It doesn't see a lot of pocket time for me though because i'm not a hard user and with so many beautiful GEC choices, the burnt orange #73 or ebony two blade #73 usually goes in my pocket for work.

would post some pics, but my camera busted on a trip last weekend! Dagnabit..

The square handles are a turn-off. No matter how much I'd like to try the O-1 steel for the price I wouldn't chance it.

You've got a pm ;)

Does anyone who owns a #99 also own a single blade #71 or #47 in the same handle material? Looking at the few pics there are, it seems to my eyes that the #99 is thicker than its slipjoint cousins.

AXE, thanks for your thoughts and picture! Love to hear that this is a working knife to you. Can't wait for mine.

I just went ahead and ordered a Black one as well. I have a feeling these may not be made again as the general consensus is they are a little too blocky (I like blocky - like 4 layer SAK blocky- but I have large hands). I know I am jumping the gun on this by ordering a second one before the first one arrives but I like I stated before I love what this knife represents. Now I will have to look high and low for the Nifebright version.
