GEC for a birthday present

My dad turns 69 early next month and I was looking to buy him a GEC to replace the 3 bladed Schrade Old Timer he's carried for a couple decades. I've been shopping a bit today but I'm not a traditional guy even with blade length and handle length I can't picture the size well. I was thinking a number 53 would be right but If you were to give someone a GEC to replace that what model would it be?

This will be a great gift for your dad! If I'm correct in assuming your dad has a stockman - the #66 calf roper is the equivalent, however you probably won't find one.
What I have seen recently from a dealer or two is a #62 Maverick. This is 3.75", and has a clip main blade, decent sized sheepsfoot, and a pen blade. I don't own one, but they look pretty pocketable to me.

Hope this helps, good luck, and happy birthday to your dad!

The #81 Abilene is the same size and approximate shape of the 8OT, if that's what he has now. You would have to do some looking to find one, but they appear from time to time. Both come in at very close to 4".

Hey GermanyChris, Supratentorial and RobbW are absolutely right.

I may have been wrong in my assumption of which knife your dad has. My recommendation would be closer to the 34OT old timer which is a little smaller, and a bit rounder than the 8OT.

Either way, I'm sure he'll love any GEC you get him. They're all great knives.

The 62 Maverick is a really pocketable medium stockman pattern. It's got a nice pointy wharncliffe secondary blade too.

The 81 may be a little hard to find in the next few weeks when you think of shipping added on. Maybe someone who knows of one can pm/email you where to find it.

If the 81 is not within reach the 62 is a great knife and often over looked. There are a few available at present and more obtainable. The 53 is also obtainable at the moment.

Ive suggested this before, but you could take him out for a beer, coffee, or soda and show him a few, start up a conversation, and buy it then and there to create a story as it is purchased.

I have the 66, 54, and the 62. Also, the Case Humpback Stockman is a great knife. I'll post a comparison of the 54 with 62 for you. If you want I can email some shots of the others. The 66 Calf Roper with 3 blades is very difficult to find. Give me a while to get the pics up.

Your Dad and I are the same age. I would treasure any of these. The 54, 62 and the Case are available. The 66, not so much. As you can see the 54 is big 4 1/8" closed and heavy with 3 full sized blades. The GEC 62 is slimmer and more in line with the Schrade. The Case is a really fine knife and the main difference to me is the main blade is a spear point. Since I own all three I feel you can't go wrong. Good luck and Happy Birthday to your Dad.

I just got a Maverick this week and am really enjoying it! I would be thrilled to receive one as a gift [emoji1417]

The Maverick is an overlooked knife much of the time. It's one drawback (if you consider it one) is the short length of the clip main compared to the frame length, because of the downturned bolsters of the congress frame. A longer blade would leave the tip exposed. Another way to look at it is that it has a nice longer handle to control the blades better.

I think we've sorta arrived at the #62 which I can find all over the internet for $95 which is what I was expecting to pay.

Someone asked why I just don't take him for a beer...well I'm in Southern Germany and he's in SW Michigan :p

Thanks folks!

Yeah, hard to get a beer when have to catch a plane and get leave.

The 62 is a great choice.
