GEC forum knife sharpening?

When it comes time to sharpen this Barlow, I have a sharp maker & a wicked edge. The edge seems super obtuse for the thickness of the blade. What angle does this steel/these knives like. And anybody with a WE, are they easy to clamp or too short?

Someone here who has actually measured the DPS with a angle cube will be able to help, but before you try to sharpen it, or touch it up, find out. I have 2 GEC knives from previous releases, and i measured their bevel angles accurately with a digital angle cube before sharpening, and i must admit i was surprised. They were both 21 degrees per side, i always thought GEC knives left the factory at 15 DPS. Congratulations on your new knife, you will enjoy it.

I have a Wicked Edge which is still fairly new and I haven’t sharpened any of my modern or traditional knives on it yet but I intend to soon.

I sharpened my
Heritage Jack on the sharpmaker and it was pretty difficult so definitely avoiding the sharpmaker.

Check this video out:

I don't know about any of the various GEC Forum knives, since I don't have one.

The two I do have, an 852211 Harness Jack, and 828318 Dixie Stockman (both have 1095 blades, like the new Forum knife) get along quite well with 10DPS (20 degrees inclusive), using my guided rod sharpener that can go that acute.
No "micro bevel" used/applied.

Very much so. I brought it up to 6 micron.
Do you use a paste on a strop to get there? I strop as a finishing touch with leather and green compound. Have no idea what micron green is rated at but I am guessing close to that. I know some pastes have a micron rating. Curious. My edge came similar to yours btw. But most knives seem to show up moderately sharp compared to where a decent sharpener who takes some time can get them I would guess.

I usually freehand sharpen with a stone, but I used a lansky on mine at 20 dps with great results. It was fairly sharp out of the tube, but not near the tip (or belly?). I like them very sharp and just straighten up regularly with leather.

My strops are 2&4. The 6 was a tape. I believe they go even higher than 6. That reminds me… I have to buy more tapes.

I can’t complain. It didn’t come dull. But to me there’s a difference between being able to cut something free standing (for instance a piece of skin that got cut or is hanging by a nail) and needing to hold on to what you’re cutting and saw away.

Before using your new Wicked Edge on your favorites, take some time to use the diamond paddles on beater blades. The stones need some break-in time; when they're new some stray diamonds can come free and gouge the blade face.

Thank you for the advice sir. I’ve sharpened all the useful knives in my kitchen and I’m now sharpening for friends and family. About 7 knives in now. Still getting used to it and better at it.

I should probably clean the stones before my next use. Lots of folks from the wicked edge Fb group recommended cutting oil/lapping fluid.

Wondering how necessary it is, do you use it?

I've been using mine for years with water as a lubricant. It seems to help me get a lighter touch on the stones, fwiw.

I find diamond stones fairly easy to maintain. I use a very cheap and easy to make lubricant, 1 part Alcohol or Cleaning Fluid/ 2 parts water, with a squirt of dishwashing detergent. It lubricates the stone and helps stop it from clogging up. To clean them, i have a nagura cleaning stone, just give it a rub under running water before you put the diamond stone away. If you feel the stone not cutting as it should, clean it under warm running water with some dishwashing detergent and a small wire brush or an old toothbrush will do.

I've pretty much settled on 20° per side for most knives....... I also like a little "tooth" to the edge for my cutting needs..... Blades that are thin behind the cutting edge are my favorites; somewhere are .020" (.5MM) seems ideal.... I really get giddy when I use and sharpen a hollow ground blade!!

I use a Ken onion work sharp to sharpen most of my knives and all of my GECs. I use it freehand and the angle is around 16-17, which I have found to be a good angle for my uses. I am not a fan of the sharpmaker except for adding a microbevel or a super quick touch up.
