Just to be clear, I'm not a furtaker, trapper, or even a muskrat. I'm just a guy who likes knives. :)

Ok, my birthday is tomorrow, and I think I deserve a little present for myself. I'm thinking that I'd like a furtaker, but I'm not sure if I want the muskrat or the trapper. I'm leaning somewhat towards the trapper because I really like the diagonal bolsters. On the other hand, i do appreciate the symmetry of the muskrat. Does anyone have any direct experience that could help me make my decision?

I chose the trapper because I like both blades opening on the same end. Otherwise, not much difference.

Likewise, I prefer jacks to pen knives.
It's just a matter of personal taste, though, so no one can decide what you like most.

Well, I guess that's that. My order goes in tomorrow. Now I just have to wait. They say it's the hardest part, but I actually enjoy the anticipation.

I find the Trapper generally more useful (aka general purpose) versus the very slim muskrat pattern. I used to skin muskrats, lots of them, and the muskrat pattern was my favorite for that task. Sharpen up two blades, cut, skin; switch blades, repeat.... then re-sharpen. The nices have to be razor sharp.

I wound up with a Muscrat because one came up "on the bay" in 440C and I really like GEC's treatment of that steel. I tend to prefer jacks over what I wound up with, but am pleased because the steel choice trumped pattern choice in this case.
If you can find both available, and with differing options, like cover material etc., I would say pick whichever ticks the most boxes for you. The way the blades nest in my muskrat, neither interferes comfort wise while using the other, and I can only imagine that the same would be true on the trapper pattern.

Have a Happy Birthday! :)

(I'd also have gone for the Trapper ;) )

Late to the party as usual, Happy Bday. I went with the trapper myself.
