Hey guys, I have bunches of knives (of course) but I was thinking about for giggles taking my GEC H10 Hunter fixed blade with me deer hunting this year. Has anyone actually used theirs for hunting / field dressing game before?
Using it to field dress a deer I'm sure will patina it up fairly quickly. I feel confident that it is capable, but as I thought about it I haven't heard of anyone using theirs for its intended purpose.

I have an H40 (the longer relative of the H10) and have used it on game. I don't specifically recall using it on deer but have on squirrels, pigs, and various food items while cooking. It's a capable knife and a great slicer. If you're familiar with using carbon steels then you shouldn't have any trouble. Just wash off any blood/fluids and keep it dry after use. Save some tallow and, once the hunt is over, use it to rub down the blade and any exposed steel to preserve it until your next use.

Make sure you post pics of it in use and show off the patina later on.

I haven't used an H10 or any other GEC fixed blade for that matter. When I was hunting whitetail or even rabbit with my grandfather, we always used a single blade Uncle Henry folding hunter. Never failed on us. But I will say, he always kept the Uncle Henry on his belt and a spare in his field dressing kit. You never know when a knife may fail and it's always better to be prepared.

I'm sure the H10 would work splendidly for you, but there's only one way to find out. I'd say give it a shot and bring a back up just in case, if you aren't already.
