GEC HT problem/ poor grind???

Evening all,

A few months ago I bought a maroon micarta GEC bullnose. Now this knife is perfect in a lot of ways, it has no blade play what so ever, it has a solid spring and centres perfectly. It just ticks virtually every box for myself Edc wise.

I have knives that in many ways are probably better, sebenza, ukpk etc. But I just love the charm of a decent sized, single blade edc. At work I can carry a locker if I so wish, and up until now I had carried my Seb, but the fact that I can just pocket dump this from my uniform on a Friday, and transfer it into my jeans ready to go home for the weekend is another bonus.

I love the patina that has developed using this day in day out, and don't want to stop carrying it.

However it has one fundamental flaw....

It just doesn't ever seem to want to get, or stay sharp!

I have had GEC knives in the past that have been easybto sharpen, and that have held an edge well. However when this one arrived, it came butterflies sharp. Now I have never had a problem sharpening before, I have everything from Waterstones to micromesh, a lansky turnbox and a DC4, aswel as hones and strops.

Now try as I might, I could just not get this knife sharp. In fact I think I probably shortened the blades lifespan by a year or two whilst trying.

Eventually I resorted to using one of those horrible sharpeners with the tungsten teeth, the sort that you drag the blade through to put a new profile/bevel on the blade,l. That combined with a good strop and it finally started putting bald patches on my arms!

Ever since though, this knife has required some serious stropping every few days to keep a decent edge. On a knife that is used predominantly for food prep once a day, this seems like an awful of upkeep.

Has anyone else experienced this? Lol Otherwise it's a fantastic knife that I would thoroughly recommend!!

Your experience is quite the opposite of mine. My favortite GEC is the natural canvas bullnose and mine holds a fantastic edge, better than GEC's 1095 imo. Im sure if you call the shop they'll take care of you, especially if it does in fact have a HT issue. Sorry to hear its given you trouble bud. It really is a great pattern!

I'm in the UK, so trying to rectify anything like this is a lengthy expensive pain in the ass. Which just makes it all the more frustrating as I love the knife. The natural micarta is a beaut, that was the one I was initially after but couldn't get it over here

I would run the primary bevel on a fine flat water stone to make sure it was ground flat. Then put reprofile the secondary (edge) bevel to a steeper angle. Finally put an even more steeper micro bevel to ensure life on the sharp edge. I had this problem with a Schrade Uncle Henry. It never held an edge for more than a couple sessions of breaking down some cardboard. I ended up reprofiling a 50 degree (inclusive) secondary bevel and a 60 degree micro bevel. Then stropped to a mirror polish. The edge held up much better and was still plenty sharp for everyday tasks.
