I am getting ready to order some Huckleberry Boys knives to be put aside for my Grandsons. I have twin Grandsons 2 yrs old and another due soon.

I am back and forth between getting them with the bail and chain or without. I like the chain in some ways but am thinking it may end up in the way. I am hoping I'll still be around when they are old enough ( in their parents eyes) to have them.

Believe I'll get the O.D. Micarta ones. Should make great users

What say you: Chain or plain for young men.

Wonderful gesture. My own choice would be no chain with pocket slip. And consider an extra (that stays with you) should one ever be lost or stolen.

In this case I would also recommend without the bail and chain...in my opinion. I like bails but they need to be pinned and out of the way of the blade when it closes.

Bail and chain.
The BSA used a bail and chain.
Back in the day a "boys knife" almost always had one so the knife was less likely to be lost.

No bail and chain in my opinion. I presonally like the idea of bone scales so they “age” with them. But as you stated micarta makes a great user too.

Another vote for no bail and chain.
I'd also consider the clip blade. I have one son that has no fingernails and needs to pinch open his blades. You'd be safe either way with the clip blade.

no bail and chain, ive scored models with bail and chain and removed the bail and chain. (these were special rendezvous models)

But a scout knife needs a spear blade!

Thank You to ALL the input,

I now have three O.D. Green Micarta # 15 Huckleberry's without the bail and chain on their way to me.

The boys are two years old now and the third won't be here until November. These will be put aside until the time is right to start them off on Traditional knives.
