Ever since I received my first GEC knife (fairly recently) I've admired the artwork on the tube labels. I can't read the artist name as it is too small. Wondering who does this and if they might be available in larger print form. I thought they would make a nice addition to a GEC collection.

Thanks for the link.

I get to wondering about them just harvesting images from the internet. For example, take the #15 boys knife and the recent #15 Charlow with sheep foot blade. The image is basically the same except a sheep is included with the Charlow label which is a nice touch. Someone had to add that sheep........

A person named Sue does the graphic work, borrowing images where necessary, and assembling the labels and site pictures.
She is great! She designs the etches as well, with guidance from Bill.
If artists were paid to paint the pictures, I doubt the knives would be nearly as affordable as they are. My wife is an artist, as well as a prof, and my experience is, original art does not come cheap.
I write the copy for my back labels, and sometimes have some influence on what goes on the front. (Like the Black Sheep on the Soup Bones:D)

Thank you waynorth - you've solved most of my puzzlement!

Great job to Sue - now I want some larger versions or like others have said a book full would be great.

The artwork on the Barlow tubes is by far my favourite, and the back labels are great too Charlie :)

GEC do a great job with the artwork, it's nice to learn a bit more about it

I like the artwork on my Missouri Trapper knife tube. Appears to be a hunter on horseback.

Absolutely love GEC artwork on the packaging. Their artwork and etching on the blade was what put me over the edge in ordering my latest from them (an ebony handled French Kate). So, the nolstalgic artwork is likely a very good for business decision... wib win win situation! :-)

The best I've seen, other than the Charlows, has to be a tie between the Ben Hogan and Missouri Trader tubes. I wish I hadn't thrown my tubes away. The tube for the French Kate looks pretty good too.

The tube idea and the artwork are a wonderful combination from GEC. A gives personality & atmosphere.

Certainly a step up from flimsy cardboard boxes with dull graphics just waiting to get crushed in the post that most knife manufacturers seem fit to offer.

The artwork reminds me of something from my childhood. I'm not sure exactly what, but I think it might be from memories of a LL Bean book or a special LL bean catalog from the 70's or early 80's. It might have been some other book, or some old paintings from somewhere, but in any case, the artwork feels very nostalgic to me. I remember it was something I often looked at quite often at one point as a young kid (hence why I think it was a book or a catalog). I think it actually might have been a book of old painting advertisements. I remember there being a lot of images of moose and geese.

I would love to see GEC put out a book of the artist's work who did all the tube's artwork!

ya should check out the art on the blade forums ltd, editions... not too shabby, wink wink nudge nudge:cool:
But yes GEC does an excellent job presenting their knives and excellent marketing materials too

Gene

well the 2013 congress was to be my swansong, at least that was my intent... we shall see
but as in all things its good to shake it up a bit, give another guy or gal a chance to shine, not sure how to go about finding a successor
need to think on it a bit
Thanks Charlie
