GEC Knives Question

Most of my traditionals are Case. That's basically all they have in stores where I live. I have been looking at GECs on line and was hoping someone could help me with a couple of questions. How does the fit and finish compare between Case and GEC and is there any difference in quality between the different GEC brands? Thanks

Here's some reading material to get you started (note: links provided because they're fairly recent threads that I believe speak to your questions; the site search failed me on this one, but a Google search for "Case vs GEC vs site:bladeforums.com" [no quotation marks] did the trick). :)

I believe some of your questions may be answered in the responses there. If not, jump on in with more specific questions.

If you are asking if GEC is worth the extra money over a Case knife, then I can answer you with a definite yes. I grew up with Case knives, and still love my Case knives, BUT have to admit my GEC knives are a bit above in terms of overall quality. Still prefer my Case Peanut over my GEC Pemberton though.

All GEC is made to the same quality standard. The N'field line typically has more bells & whistles, such as high polish blades and pinched and/or lined bolsters. There's a section on their website that better describes this.

IMHO the GEC's spank Case knives by a good margine especially when it comes to fit and finish. To me there's no comparison until you get to the Case/Bose line of special runs.

No disrespect to Case, they're classic working-man's tools, but GEC (especially the Northfields) take it up a few notches.

JMHO :)

Thanks so much. Are the Northfields higher quality?

Yes and no. Northfields will be fancier. Handle materials will be premium, bolsters will be embellished in some way (fluting, pinching, etc), shields are usually fancier, and the blades will have more dramatic swedging and often have long pulls rather than simple nail nicks.

But that isn't to say that their Tidioute line is of lower quality. They're as well-made as the Northfields, just without all the bells and whistles.

In my opinion, I've owned a handful of Case knives and GEC blows them out of the water. I will happily pay more money for a GEC. All but one of the Case knives I've owned has had blade play and just kind of so-so fit and finish. GEC knives have awesome fit and finish and almost seem like custom knives.

I wish Case would get back to how they made knives pre 1985 because they kicked butt.
