Ive read a lot about them(Great eastern cutlery) on here but when i look for them I find Tidioute or Northfield UN-X-LD.

My only real question is why?

Northfield and Tidioute are the main brand names that Great Eastern (the manufacturer) puts on their knives. There are also knives put out with the Great Eastern Cutlery brand on them but not in as large numbers as the other two I think.

Hmmm....not to repeat myself, but...

To my knowledge, Great Eastern Cutlery has three in-house brands, Northfield, Tidioute, and Great Eastern. Northfield and Tidioute both use 1095. Great Eastern uses 440C. The other differences have to do with finish and materials. Northfields tend to have higher finishes than Tidioute, i.e., long pulls, pinched bolsters, and polished blades. Northfields also tend to have higher end materials, i.e., stag, snakewood, and primitive bone (for whatever reason, buffalo horn has typically been seen in the Tidioute line). Great Eastern is an odd duck. It usually has higher end finishes. It is also where you usually see elk.

Hope that helps.

Northfield and Tidioute were brands that existed long ago. Great Eastern Cutlery produces knives that are built like those knives were built back then. The head honchos at GEC chose to put the Northfield and Tidioute brands on some of their knives as kind of a tribute to those high quality knives of yesteryear.

That's the way I understand it anyways.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding GEC branded knives have 440c stainless blades. All Northfields and Tidioute are made with 1095 blades.
