gec ... looking glass scales

Couldn't find much info elsewhere but I was wondering if the great eastern cutlery knives with scales marked ''abalone looking glass'' for example are they actual abalone or are they acrylic scales that kinda look like abalone so they call it ''abalone looking..'' ?

Pardon my ignorance if incorrect.
I think they are a layer of the actual shell coated in acrylic .
This would lend durability & toughness to the scales so makes sense.
