This knife was manufactured by GEC in 2007 when GEC was just getting their feet wet in the knife building business. It was built for the new owner of the Schrade name (Taylor) and is built on GEC's #73 Pattern/Frame. The label on the box the knife came in lists the knife as "SUSA3S Custom Black Pick Bone Fire + Ice USA Made" and the name "Taylor Brands, LLC is imprinted in gold lettering under the label. The name SCHRADECUT.Co WALDEN is stamped into the tang on the mark side of the Drop Point/Skinner blade but it is evident to me that no attempt has been made to pass this knife off as a pre-2004 Schrade knife as "TAYLOR BRANDS" is stamped into the tang on the pile side of that blade and “SCH-2007-C.D.” (indicating year of manufacture) is stamped into the tang on the pile side of the Spey Blade.

This knife is a Trapper and is built just as well as any GEC knife I have ever owned – better than a couple/three GEC knives that I have and is finished better than ANY GEC knife I have ever had or seen. It is 3 3/4" long with both blades being 3 1/8" long. Both blades are 1095, have half stops, and are centered in the liners . On the box label, the scales are described as Black Pick Bone and are very well done. The shield is pinned, the bolsters are ringed, and the nail nicks are match strike pulls.

I have also had my eye on a GEC made trapper (with Scharade or Bulldog name).

May just have to do

I've had a couple of GEC made Bulldog USA knives and their quality was top notch. Their brown winterbottom bone is gorgeous too.
It's the one on the left, compared to a Tidioute branded knife. The Bulldog brand also has match-striker pulls.

The "Fire & Ice" "Schrades" were made in 2 sizes. I have one of each and paid just under $50 per knife. I have about 10 other GEC's, but these Fire & Ice are by far the best, in fact i'd go as far to say one of the best U.S.A. production knives post WW II. The Square and Clean joints top it off as an awesome knife.

Wow, for that money, thats a hell of a buy then for that nicer knife eh Roland!

yes it is. these still show up occasionally on USA ebay although some sellers are beginning to ask more for them.

You definitely won't be sorry. When you get them you might think that they (GEC) didn't seat the shield deep enough in the covers. They did seat them just fine with just a bit of the shield sitting on/a tad above the cover. The shields are pinned and are done nicely. This is nothing to worry about or to request an adjustment. I have many knives with the shield set this way. Heck, some manufactures used to just set the shield on the cover with no or perhaps only a 1/32" inlay.

Anyway, just thought I'd bring it up before you got your knife and question the shield placement.

I now have 4 of the larger pattern and 1 of the smaller. This is after trading a couple off. I just can't resist picking them up on ebay when nobody is bidding. With the square and flush joints (a German method brought to USA by a cutler brought over from Germany by Remington in 1920 according to BRL) and their totally solid construction and 1095 steel, for $50 they are an incredibly good deal. Who cares what the shield or markings say, they are GEC and a copy of an old Remington.
Get one (or more) if you don't have one yet.

The difference between the Remington 1173 and the GEC 73 (Schrade discussed in this thread included) is that the Remington was 3 1/2" closed and the GEC is 3 3/4" closed.

For shame, Modoc!
All this attention will hurt my chances of hoarding the rest lmao
How dare you give props when taylor brand does something right. ;)

Hey!!!! Ya gotta give credit where credit is due!!!! These Fire & Ice Schrades made by GEC for Schrade in 2007 are for my .02¢, the best made prodution knives abailable and the best ever made by GEC. I just might have to pick up another four or so for X-Mas presents for the Grandsons and nephews this year.

Guys, guys, guys!...
I've just ordered a red boned one...crisis averted ;)
Thanx for the incentive, Modoc
