Since getting into traditional knives, I have been on the search for the perfect pattern to fit me. *I enjoy the barlow , doctor, sway back, and canoe patterns. But recently I have been on the search for a nice congress pattern to try. After researching the pattern I finally figured out that a half congress would be my best route. So the search ensued. I settled on the GEC Northfield easy congress pattern #62.

I was somewhat reluctant to go for the GEC because the knives that I have handled from them, while being beautiful, have just not been that pocketable. The ones that have been pocketable have had springs that made the knife darn near useless. So I called the folks I was planning on ordering from and the very nice Wendy Bohn took the time to grab the #62 that I was wanting and answer some questions about it. Based on our conversation, I placed my order and it arrived yesterday.

This knife is stunning. The FF is what you would expect from GEC. The bolsters have a nice pinch and are threaded. The blade grinds are thin and well executed. The Sambar stag is well matched with no gaps to speak of between the bolsters or the liners. The pull on this beauty is absolutely perfect. I would say that it is a very solid 5. Its firm, but smooth, even with the half stops. This knife is a perfect replacement for my Case sway back. It’s a bit larger, coming In at 3.75” in length, but it is just as thin and easily rides in the pocket. I already have my sights set on another one.

Nice!!
I have the same exact piece. A little tough on the nail pull but not sooo bad. I only carry this one in a slip-sheath. No sense banging up such a nice knife

good luck with her

Like I said, the pull on mine is just about perfect. My previous experience w/ a smaller GEC was one of their barlows, and It felt like I needed a titanium fingernail with a hydraulic assisted knuckle joint to open it.

I really like the blade patterns on this knife, much better than the trapper I've been carrying for the last couple of months. I may have to order one of these up; thanks for the post and the pics, zrfunited. Beautiful knife you have there.

LOL - I got a kick out of this post! :D (Not in regards to your problem, but in describing the needed solution to the problem).

The earlier GEC #25's had some real nail-breaker pulls on them, no doubt about that. If you like the GEC Barlow pattern in general I'd suggest taking a look at some of the ones that came out earlier this year (or was it late last year?). Anyway, much friendlier than the early ones.

Beautiful #62 you have there!

Thanks for the info coyote! Glad I could make you laugh. I do in fact like the #25 pattern. The size is really pocket friendly. I will give them another look. Previous to that Barlow, I had no idea what a true "nail breaker" was. The first time I opened it it it tore the upper part of my thumbnail off and even retained some of it in the nail nick. It's my basis for what a 10 is on the NB scale

I would really like to get my grubby hands on one, even though I usually do not like redundant blades. The dark Jigged bone version looks perfect to me, but your stag looks great too!
