I've been into the traditional side of this sport for a bit now. Started with Case, and now very much into GEC knives. Northwoods knives are made by GEC, and aside from pattern and blade shape differences, is there a qualitative difference between the two? Something more than just cosmetics, as like the differences between Tidioute and Northfield.

Not that I need to start chasing Northwoods also...

In short, I'd say no. There's no difference in quality or manufacturing process, as Northwoods are made by GEC (at least all the recent/current folders). Some things that may set Northwoods apart a bit are a frequent (but not total) use of saber grinds....the heat treat slag on the blade (often, but not always) and some cover materials that GEC does not frequently use on their knives, but do on Northwoods, because the materials are supplied by KSF (or Northwoods); namely, mammoth, giraffe, kudu, custom burlap, denim, etc.

I think you nailed it except that the handle materials are usually different than the GEC offerings.

One thing to note is that there were lots of Northwoods knives made before GEC started making them. Most, if not all, made by Queen.

In my experience, having owned about a dozen NWs, my GEC models usually have better fit and finish. Every time I've gone through the gauntlet of purchasing one there has been an issue (either cosmetic or with the blade edge) with the knife I receive. Conversely, I have a handful of GEC (mostly Northfields from 3-4 yrs ago) that are nearly flawless and on par with my customs.
I do love how Northwoods look on the website, but I have only kept one (a Broadway Jack) and will probably not pursue them in the future......................................ok, I'm sure I'll be suckered in again

I like the all steel construction on Northwoods,
The fit and finish seems to be on par with other GEC SFO, a cut above.
I have only had a handful, one does have brass liners, but it's stag so I forgive it..

That has been my experience as well. GEC seems to take a bit more care with the SFO's than their regular production. But their regular production is quite good and I have never been let down by either. I stopped the quest for Northwoods because they seem to sell out so quickly and it is just too much of a PIA to pursue them. If they don't sell out quickly, I can wander over to KSF to look at them now since they moved to TN. But they do not give priority treatment at their little store (in person) in terms of stock or that is my impression. They are a fulfillment operation with a small store front. However, it is fun to visit them in person as you see things that are not in their catalog such as old Queens or GECs.
