How do you guys like the white and grey pearl acrylic on some GECs? I've been looking at getting a #09 and right now I see some with gray pearl acrylic, white pearl acrylic, and some really nice bocote. It's a tough choice, that knife would be really classy if pearl clad, but I'm not sure how well the acrylic pulls off the effect.

Anyone have experience with the pearl acrylics? How do you like them? Have any pictures or videos of them?

I actually prefer it to the real stuff:D It's tougher too:thumbup:

Some people look down on acrylics, which in the case of GEC's range, is I think incomprehensible. GEC has put out some really fine acrylic knives that go some considerable way to capture the beauty and fun of Cell without its hideous potential side-effects. (gassing, ruining knives stored nearby, corroding metals and inflammable properties...:D) I'm very keen on some of their acrylics, notably Tortoise, Dead Skunk, Kryptonite, Lava Lamp and this Grey Pearl on a 66 Slim centre.

If you do a search, there was, I believe, a thread on GEC acrylics which you may find of interest.

Many thanks Rick! I have to say it looks a lot better in reality than my crap photo. I like the shield too, would be great to see that on more offerings.

I agree that the general disdain some people have for acrylic is a bit ridiculous. There are obviously some bad examples, but acrylic can be really beautiful and durable when done right. There are some talons with lava lamp acrylic that I'd really like to snag as well, but I already have a 92 and I don't any sleeveboards.

That's a great photo of some gray pearl, lots of figure, must be spectacular in person.

Well I for one look down on these knives with utter disdain and a large dollop of muttering and cursing under my breath.
The reason for that is that is that they represent a whole entire new collection of tasty little beauties to be had and I simply can not afford it.
:grumpy:
Case also has a massive array of acrylics.

I think the main difference is the white peal acrylic doesn't really get the greens and pinks in the light that real MOP does. Other than that, it does look good. I don't have a group pic but here's an #09 in MOP, White and Grey pearl acrylic. Hopefully the pics help.

GEC's acrylic does hold up well imo but can get scratched. Not sure it'll affect the looks greatly on the pearl acrylics though. Here's the white pearl acrylic #09 again along with a #66 grey acrylic. Both are unused but the tortoise shell acrylic #33 and kryptonite #68 were carried. The #33 is my most carried GEC acrylic. At the bottom is the #33 from when new. Its maybe a little less shiny but that's about it.

For me, acrylic is an odd material. Most acrylic doesn't move me at all, but occasionally I'll see acrylic that I consider to be achingly beautiful. The pearl gray pictured in this thread is definitely an example of the latter!!:eek::thumbup: Will's 66 and Trand's 09 are totally amazing. And Jose, I really like the covers of your French Kate, too, but I especially like that "bodice" shield on a lady leg knife; it made me laugh because it's such a delightful combination! :D:cool:

Well, I might as well throw in an Orange Crush perylic.

Notice the one pictured is perylic while some of the others are acrylic.

There is a great thread about the perylic, acrylic, celluloid, and other covers of like nature but you'll have to search for it. Further, I think there is a good comparison at Knives Ship Free.

Per Mike at Collector Knives:

GEC uses the term perylic for their acrylic slabs that have pearl-like chips in them. So they have 3 acrylic products - acrylic, percrylic, and looking glass (they also have a more expensive non-mosaic looking glass that they call looking glass+). All are surfaced with the same material.
