Over the weekend, I had the chance to finally check out a full size GEC Pioneer 2 blade trapper. This knife is a beast. Just moved up on my "Gotta have" list. I would like to hear from those who have carried this knife. Too big for practical use? What are your thoughts on carrying this knife? I'm already sold on their steel and springs.

of course i have several of the 23s in single & double blade configuration. the single blade is my carry in the country. i wear it in a horizontal belt sheath. the 2 blade is a real beast & would be relegated to a belt pouch or back pack. really the double blade would be for a camping trip or extended hunting for a week or longer. these babies are suited for hard work & one of my favorite rural knives. my single blade 23 did 2 whitetail last year. i relieve the bevel for a smoother keener edge.

I carry a two blade variety almost every day. It's big, but not obtrusive if you can keep it vertical in your pocket. A bandana or cell phone beside it works pretty well.

I have a couple of those. Beautiful? Yes. Well made? Yes. Extremely rugged? Yes. Too big for practical carry? For me, yes. Carried in a sheath, it would be a great knife. The springs are pretty heavy, but if you like that, it's a good thing. When you pull that bad boy open, you definitely know you're opening a knife. It is not an operation to be taken lightly.:p

Those 23s are real monsters. You could club a seal with one, should the occasion arise.

That would be a pretty good hunting knife, I would think. It is 1/2" longer than the Trappers I have so I'm not sure. I put my larger knives in my back pocket beside my billfold and it works pretty good. My 4" trappers are not big enough to require that though.

I want to get a Hunter simply because it is big. I figured I'd try to use it as a hunting knife to see how well it worked. Let me know how you use it.

Too big for me but I didn't let that stop be from picking one up. :)

These knives are large workhorses, but they carry ok in jeans, especially in a deep watch pocket.

Take off the bolsters and the shield, reinforce the pivot, there's your sodbuster, right there. The blade profile is perfect.

Just pressed Pay Now on a stag handled #23 single blade skinner

(and a stag #48 - I am wayyyy past psyched :D :D)

Probably going to pop the scales on my yellow bone single skinner #23 and swap for grey boxwood burl

Me? No.

But I do know several people who can :D :D

(Ever seen a piece of Ringed Gidgee :))

How do you guys find the springs on your Pioneers?

I own one and it is nearly impossible to open. It is a very strong and well made knife, but for cripes sake, it is a real devil to open!

Yes I have, and if it flares up I have some ointment

you can use  ;) :D

My Smooth bone #23 is pretty easy to open. But I had a SARPNT (notice I

said had) that was a REAL booger to open. The new owner loves it. I am

glad he like it
