GEC: Purple Haze Acrylic

In 2008, Great Eastern Cutlery produced three knives with a handle material they named "Purple Haze acrylic." The pattern was #252208. To my knowledge, they have never re-released this handle material.

I am not sure if anyone would be willing to show us all a picture, but it is a vibrantly colored "loud" style of handle material. It has a similar look to pictures of galaxy clusters like you might find in a science textbook. Blues once compared it to Van Gogh's "Starry Night."

I have only ever seen two different pictures of the purple haze acrylic on the internet and they can no longer be found. It is so elusive, the only thing keeping me from thinking it wasn't a dream is the fact that GEC has it listed in their 2008 production totals. :D

I would like to know if there is any interest for GEC to make the Purple Haze acrylic again. I would like to see it in production, from time to time. (For the right pattern, it can look great.)

Pictures of this material are welcome, of course.:D

Thanks for reading,

Max

Calling Judy...Judy...purple knives in aisle 1 :D

Don't think I've seen this one so I'd be interested in pics as well.

Hi Max. Ya, I remember the Purple Haze acrylic, and I also recall Elliott comparing it to Starry Night. I just did a quick cruise and was only able to find one image. My computer skills are limited, but here's what I came up with:

Agreed!!!! I could go for that coloration on a big barlow from GEC!!!

...Wow. I hadn't expected it to look that nice.

Thanks for digging up a picture!

Too Cool, never seen this one before. I would love to see another edition made!

That's the first picture I've seen of it. Maybe we could get the 2012 forum knife in that pattern!?!

Thanks for the responses everyone! This was such a low-key edition, I don't think many people ever knew about it.

Keith, thanks for digging up that picture! That might be one of the three I have not seen before.

This is probably my favorite acrylic from GEC. The only reason I say "probably" is because I have never seen it in person. Even then, I have always been overly impressed with GEC's execution of acrylic handles.

You said it! :D:thumbup: I would like to see this acrylic come back at some point. It is too cool to be limited to only three knives!

I remember that, some time ago, there was quite a debate (on the first BF knife thread) about purple handles and so on...well this purple is really cool (even the name is cool..we'll wait for the "foxy lady acrylics" as well).
Thanks to Max for bringing this out, I had never seen this before, but I'd sure love to get a knife with that handle.
Even the 2012 BF Congress Jack ;)

You're welcome, Max. IIRC, the picture I saw before had a few more "stars", as in Van Gogh's painting. Very cool!

..... but I'd sure love to get a knife with that handle.

You're right, Fausto - that would look great on the 2012 BF Wharncliffe Trapper! ;)

I admit I don't know that much about the topic, but from what I've seen, GEC is the first company 'investing' into acrylic handles and introducing a few new ones every year. I can't say I love them all, but some of them (like this one) really look great and, somehow, they open a different "chapter" in traditional knives. Some may like them, others might stick with bone and stag and so on, but they're surely introducing something new.
As for the 2012 knife, I fear someone will get in and say that the Purple Haze scales have been chosen for the 2012 BF Whaler :D

Bulldog used that color extensively in the early 1990's; they called it purple swirl.
