early cardboard cutting between g.e.c. mdl 23 & queen mt. man folders seems to show gec superior in edge endurance. these 2 folders have about = blade length, gec is 1095 queen is d2.i reprofiled both to a more acute angle[please do'nt query me as to the degree of angle]i not know how to measure same.basic same shaving sharpness & cut cardboard by the clock, touched up both to shaving sharpness. gec cut noticeably longer, & finger nail drag test also seemed to show 1095 had a finer grain structure. opinions please.thanks dennis. one week later' went to cleaning product supplier & got cardboard boxes all from same chemical co.all boxes were double thick card. [275 # burst strength ] got the clock out & starting my tests the g.e.c. cut only slightly longer than queen mt. man. 1095 against queen d2. this tests the g.e.c. only cut 1 min. longer than the d2. wore a rubber glove on left hand so as to hold card. easier.you really have to push on knife to get through double card.neither knife loosened up after this tough cutting. both sweetened up in a few seconds to original sharpness.one factor : the queen cut longer with factory edge than after my reprofile. i attribute this to queens original polished edge. i'm sure forum guys will get better cutting since they know how to mirrow polish their edges. both were slippies & mdl for g.e.c . was #23, queen was mdl.# 3.

I wonder if the difference is more due to heat treat than difference in steel ?

Its not very often you hear someone saying that 1095 came out ahead of D2.
I like 1095, it has never disappointed me and I like the fact that it has been around a long time and is still going

Well I certainly agree that 1095 has a finer grain structure than D2. D2 has walloping big carbides.

But your cardboard cutting results do not match my experiences with D2.
