I just received two 72 lockbacks from the current production run. One green bone, and a Cocobolo. The knives are great. I haven't had time to take pictures yet, but will.
My question is, neither knife came with birth certificates. Is that normal ? I thought I would ask here first, before I contacted the dealer.

Usually only the ones with serial numbers have birth certificates.

Not sure I have ever seen a birth certificate from GEC and I have about a dozen serialed knives. Steven

I got a warncliff cody jack in green bone and it has a touch of blade play. Do yours? I'm debating if I should send it in or what. None of the slip joint gecs I own have any.

The serialized ones I own have birth certificates, the non-serialized do not.

Thanks all. My first 72 came with a birth certificate, so I assumed they all have them.

This run of 72's were only 25 knives in each handle material. None serialized. GEC only serializes knives in runs of 50 or more. If it's a 50 knife run, they generally serialize 25 knives. Only the Serialized knives have a Certificate of Authenticity.

I'm confused, do you mean this is actually 1of 50 but they etch 1 of 25 on the blade and write it on the cert?

There was some discussion on here about a year ago about how some of the non-serialized knives from the earlier years were worth more $$ (to some people) because they were made in such few numbers. Typically they would serialize 50 knives and then if they had sufficient handle material they might make anywhere from 3-6 more knives without numbers. People being what they are, some were seen on the secondary market with "1 of only 4 made!" on the description, when in fact there were 55 made. It seemed wrong to the people who paid 7-8 dollars more at issue for the serialized models to see the non-serialized fetching top dollar. So GEC made an effort to only serialize the first 25, helping insure they would usually (but not always) be the rarer models.

I have an interesting 1 of 5 non-serialized Cuban muskrats in antique green jigged bone from 2007,
of which they made 125 serialized knives.

Only time will tell if it commands a higher price.

Some of the earlier serialized knives were made in larger quantities. Typically what they do is make the serialized first, and run the non-serialized with the materials remaining. Very often there is not enough handle material to make the full run of non-serialized knives. Therefore, typically, the non-serialized are actually less in quantity produced.

Yep send it back and they'll take care of it for you.

Thanks, I am sending an email to the vendor first to see what they say. I watched a youtube video that went over a guy's experience with gec customer service. While they went above and beyond to solve the issue it took a long time so I'm going to see what the vendor says first.

... And sometimes, a knife will have a "1 of 50" blade etch on it, but GEC's posted production totals reveal that only 30-some knives were actually made in the run.
