I've noticed that on a lot of their folders the one or more of the pins may not be flush with the scale surface. This leaves a noticeable little cavity in the scale. Is there a reason for this?

KBA, that thread you linked was a Very informative read, thank you. And ATS, I had been wondering about that myself (probably for years in the back of my mind).

I'd noticed it before, figuring it was probably a part of the manufacturing process. Serving more as an anchor and guide than an actual fastener, but I really hate it. I suppose I should just research a good way to fill it. I saw it mentioned in the thread mentioned above, but it's not terribly clear.

I think GEC's knives are a fantastic value so I don't really mind doing a bit of finishing work if I can figure out a good way to do it.

If you're concerned about the 92s with smooth covers, that front pin sits right on the curve and is flush with the front edge. So yes, the back of the head is recessed a bit. You'll see it's not like that with the jigged bone because those handles are flatter. Reading that other thread it seems some people don't like the way GEC did that. My feeling is if you get one in your hands and really look at it you'll see they did it for a good reason.

Can you explain that good reason for me?
