Today I got the new Scagel Barehead jack from KSF and thought I would compare it to the GEC #73 two blade Scout. I was losing light as I headed outdoors but I still got some reasonable shots. Enjoy. :)

They both have blades of 1095. The GEC blades are polished whereas the Scagel blades are more of a satin finish. The GEC has long nail nicks whereas the Scagel has the straight-through nail nicks. Careful when you open the Scagel if you have longer nails (oops, need to cut mine) because those holes might just torque the nail right off your finger. :p

The bolsters are a bit different. My Scout is serialized and the Scagel is not. The Scagel has Indian Sambar Stag, and my Scout has ... sorry I forgot and don't want to dig out the tube at the moment. :o The shields are pinned on both, though the Scagel is pinned straight through the center of the shield.

Good stuff!

Also of note, both blades on the Scout are swedged and the Scagel has none. One last pic to share.

Hi,

A very nice pair! I kind of like the pierced nicks. And the stag looks great too. I have to admit though, I'm a sucker for swedges. I'd be hard pressed to have a favorite between these two.

mikeymoto great pics, if i live long enough i wish to be able to produce photos like yours. personally i like the looks of the gec better. tumbled blades just ca'nt compete with polish even though the polish is'nt a perfect mirrow shine.actually the scagel finish looks to be glaze, also the shield looks inset on gec while the scagel shield looks like its on the stag surface. initial examples favor the gec i.m.h.o.great podt thanks for the entriguing comparison.

The original Scagels are pretty crude, if effective knives, and they appear to have tried to keep that philosophy going with this latest iteration, as least in the blades. Minimal finishing, and no swedges. The stag handles on yours are however just beautiful, Mike.
A little less Scagel-ish than the first ones that Dave Shirley had done, but nice nonetheless!
I, like others here. like the GEC/Tidioute blades better, though.

Nice! I really like the curved clip point blade. Not sure if the rougher finish justifies the steep cost, but I definitely see this one being adding to my collection eventually.

Although I don't understand the obcession of some knife makers/companies to put holes in their blades, the pictured Scagel does look nice. At least the hole in each blade is proportional to the blade. The handles are very good. I too like the slightly curved clip on the Scagel.
