I was recently gifted my 1st GEC. A very nice stag #48 Weasel. The large ornate stamp on the front of the tube says it's 1095 carbon, which is what I thought all GEC's are. The back of the tube has a small white sticker with the model #, GEC,muskrat clip, weasel, sambar stag and SS. Am I correct in assuming that this is a stainless steel model?--Thanx for any info--5 minute later-I just took a look at the thread on stainless traditionals and realized I was wrong about GEC's being all carbon--KV

Does the tube say 'weasel'? If so, that's a very recent nickname GEC gave to the dog leg trapper, indicating its from the latest run of 48s, which were all 1095. If the last two digits of the tang stamp say 17 then this would confirm it- they have only made 1095s in 2017.

There are other ways to tell - but this is one simple way.

The letters 'SS' then probably indicate the dealer has labelled the knife to match it up to photos of it they produce on their website. Since there are only 26 letters in the alphabet, some of the larger dealers have to go through the alphabet twice - that's how you reach 'SS'.

If it's a Tidioute or Northfield branded knife, then it's 1095. If it is a GEC branded knife, then it's 440C.

Thanks gentlemen! Its a Northfield and has the 17. I'm pleased it's carbon. Great F&F. Easily comparable to some of my older traditionals.--KV
