I just seen the gec sudbuster thread and that's amazing.

What is an alternative that's not as expensive ( flipper prices grrr ) but pretty similar?

I never can get gec in time but I do like what they do.

I'm sorry, I meant sudbuster, i accidently put sod..I fixed it now. I guess basically a sod but with a bottle opener. Also I dig the micarta

I appreciate your answers though, I like the case sodbuster really nice might get one of those to

Possibly some Victorinox Alox model.
Rough Rider also has some models with bottle openers
Lionsteel has some too, not that cheap.

I have one of these Maserin Plows and I think it is a pretty good alternative . Because it has the Lanyard Eyelet , I rate it above my Case , but not as good as my GEC 71 . It was a Gift from a very good friend 3 years ago . Good Steel and very light in the pocket .

The only other sodbuster-with-a-caplifter I can think of is the Esnyx Beer Buster, and that won’t save you any money. 😉

Michael Morris friction folders are interesting knives, with a similar aesthetic (Micarta, no frills, etc), though obviously not a sodbuster. They have a bottle opener built into the tang. The blade on this one is a wharncliffe, but he makes them in other blade shapes, including a drop point.

Unfortunately that isn’t a budget option either.

All you did was make me want another expensive knife lol really like both of those. The esynx I like better than the gec sudbuster.

I am going to interpret your question as looking for alternatives to caplifter jacks, ie main blade plus caplifter/screwdriver, both on the same end. This is one of my favorite patterns and I hunt for them relentlessly. Here are some I know about:

Boker has a single arm version (about $35) and a more expensive spear-main version (about $210 currently)
Hartkopf have a few in the $175-250 range
Rough Rider has an out of production Tailgate Trapper which occasionally shows up on the Bay for $20 or so.
Case has a mini trapper version, also out of production which occasionally shows up on the Bay for $65 or so.

Notice that all of the currently available knives are of foreign manufacture. That is ok, but I personally like to buy traditional American-made, when possible. The various GEC models (15, 85, and 71) are all excellent. Some of these are even priced competitively with the better Boker knife. Watch the exchange for a deal. Currently the 85's and the 71's are actually a really good buy (at under $180), in my opinion; their quality is top shelf. I own the RR Tailgate Trapper, the Case mini Trapper, and one of the cheaper Hartkopfs. Every one of the GEC caplifter jacks I own is far superior to any of these. It is not even close.

Now, if you are talking about vintage American-made versions, things get tricky. There are some really nice ones in this category, but they are rare as hens teeth. This pattern was produced in small numbers by Schrade, Remington, Queen, Camillus, Imperial, Hammer, Syracuse Knife Co, Camco, and others. They do occasionally show up, but they are not common and are frequently damaged or worn out. Many of these have the same Easy-Open-with-bail layout as the GEC 15 Beer Scout. I hunt for them daily and rarely see good ones, but they do exist. I recently saw a nice Queen version from the 1970's on the bay and sniped a bid at $225, and still lost.

In the end, I recommend you watch the exchange and grab an 85 or a 71 under $180. If you are patient, you will find one.

Another option, make your own. This is a $14 Rough Rider with a $5 replacement Queen caplifter. It took me about two hours to remove the pen secondary and put in the caplifter. Its a great pattern.

Wow man thanks, you gave me a lot of stuff to look into. Think I'll do that rr upgrade regardless just for fun plus it looks great

Here's a few choices in all price ranges. I always carry something with a secondary that has a lifter. The Leatherman Micra comes in steel and also has color scales options and can be found on eBay very cheap. I have three of them because it's got multiple tools and is less than 3 inches! Perfect budget friendly edc. It's a little smaller than an Alox.

Hey Rhinofly, just picked up a Case mini Trapper with Cap Lifter on ebay. Should be here by Monday. I'll post pics when I can. Amber bone, been looking for over a year. Now I need to find the yellow, and red white and blue scales!

That's a cool idea, I've been looking for a little project to start learning how to modify slipjoints so that might be it
