Hi Dennis :D

I like the look of the toenail, then I see GEC is coming out with a spearpoint
model 72 soon
I need more money.

i have also been going back and forth about the all steel feature of this forthcoming offering. additional thoughts on the wear/aging of this model?

I got a number here with me. I can't find anything wrong with 'em. The scale pins are brass, so they aren't quite all steel.

If anyone is interested, they are not heavier than the previous run.

For comparison:

2008 Northfield banana (bone) - 6.1 oz
2008 Northfield Stag - 6.5 oz
2008 Tidioute Acrylic - 5.7 oz
2010 Tidioute Cocobolo (wood) - 5.8 oz
2008 Tidioute Grizzly (bone) - 6.1 oz
2010 Tidioute Grizzly (bone) 5.8 oz
2008 Tidioute Black Cherry (bone) 6.2 oz
2010 Tidioute Black Cherry (bone) 5.9 oz

So in comparing the bone versions the all steel ones are lighter.

The 2010 has more in the way of swedging on the main blade, the shield is smaller...

I'd like to take a look at it on GEC's website but since they changed their format, I can't break out some of their topics such as Pocket Knives, etc..

Sounds like it'll be a nice knife.

Those toenails are beasts. They feel like a folding hatchet when you open them for the first time. When I pulled mine out of the box, my first impression was that it was a cartoon knife. ;) They're very odd, if you're used to medium stockmen and the like. But not overly bulky or unwieldy once you get used to it. The "pen" blade still trips me out though. Sooooo much belly! :D

the toenail is certainly my favorite pattern at the moment. the weight of it does not concern me in the least and i have to agree with an old post i read somewhere here that the toenail seems to be the pattern with the "best sense of humor." i just love it.:D
one of my two from GEC is not with me at the moment but here is one on hand in antique walnut bone:

i am very much looking forward to the new toenail/sunfish in ebony but the hiccup for me is the question of maintenance and the whole knife potentially taking a patina. suppose it doesn't matter if it does. i'll probably go for it either way but still interested in any thoughts you all may have.
thanks

I knew that this Northfield Stag Sunfish in my pocket was heavy. I had no idea stag was that much more heavy than acrylic or wood.

wonderful comparison eswartz. this is certainly a thread to aid versed & unversed gec consumers. the cocobolo looks like a must have to stand with his ebony buddy i've ordered. thanks for denoting the swedge features.

hmm, guess i was too long winded above.

anybody worried about rust inside an all steel knife?

Yes  I love the look and the (maybe) added strength but the

possible rust issue made me go hmmmmm. And I am a nut on oiling the joints

and wiping the blades :)

thanks for responding, .41Dude.
the siren call of a an ebony handle on this model is pulling me one way. my brain, the other. we shall see. regardless, i love the #36 pattern and hope that GEC continues its production.
i'll keep my fingers crossed for a swell center  :D

Get a spray can of RemOil or 3-in-1 oil and a gun cloth or a piece of flannel and yer good to go. I'll bet you guys will be more concerned with keeping yer knives sharp from using them than cleaning rust off of them.

i can assure members that the patina that develops on the big iron bolsters actually gives a great compliment to handle material. i'm an ole timer & REMEMBER THE FATTIES FROM THE 50S & 60S & earlier. my concerns with the new sunfish were the mechanics of blade opening & closing. i understand some changes were made.

Why do I keep opening this thread? Perhaps if I hint enough and send her enough links to it, SWMBO will get the clue that I really need this knife.

I had not heard anything about this regarding the opening mechanics. I thought the changes were only to component materials.

It is different if you are used to the old toenails. It is not a fast snap. More like a bank vault door slow and secure. Springs are stout too, can be a nail buster.
