My freshly sharpend GEC northfield Pioneer just bit me. I was opening it, and with the realy strong spings that takes a lot of force; so when the blade hit the half stop, the blade stopped but my nail slipped out out of the nail nick and my finger Just kept on going, right into the edge of the knife and now I am missing half of the skin on my right thumb knuckle. The hunk of skin is still on the knife though. Am I the only one clumsy enough for this to happen too or has it happened to some of you too?

I had to get used to my GEC's. Still have to take my time with 'em. If anybody ever had to use one of mine I would not feel comfortable letting them open it. That said, I would'nt change a thing about 'em. :) take care, M

Man, the EXACT same thing happened to me last week with my pioneer. I'm not a big fan of how stiff the springs are or the half stop for that matter. Left a nice little crater in my thumb knuckle. I probably won't be buying another GEC.:thumbdn:

That's why I don't like half-stops and try to avoid knives that have that "feature". To me it is much safer to open a sharp knife if the blade opens in one smooth motion. YMMV.

Agree 100%. I wonder if there is anyone on bf who removes half stops?

I like half stops... To me it gives the knife an extra touch of quality.

I'm confused, If your opening the knife and your nail slips, shouldn't your finger be going away from the edge instead of towards it ?

My 40-year-old Carl Schleiper Eye Brand sodbuster has a brutal spring, it really snaps open with authority (I don`t have much fear of it accidentally closing on me), but I *always* pay strict attention when opening it....I have a healthy respect for that razor-sharp edge....

I like half stops, it makes me feel like the knife is better quality. That being said, I have had the same thing happen to me.

I have a GEC #25 Barlow. 2weeks ago I was cleaning some polish off the knife and while opening the small blade my my nail slipped out of the nick and my thumb slid right over the blade. A nice slab of meat was cut off and it was a bloody mess. The GEC's and Tidioute's do have some serious backspring on them. I'm not complaining. Shame on me for not being MORE careful. It is a Knife after all....:D

my tried to open my 110 with one hand some time ago and cut my thumb real good. a week later i tried closing it with one hand and my leg and cut the crap out of my leg. lessons learned for me.

This is why I don't carry my GECs any more. Those backsprings are killers. They're cool when you first get them, and say "Wow! This is a really heavy duty knife!" Not so much for everyday carry and use. I broke my thumbnail one too many times on a GEC. I don't mind halfstops, so long as they're not "WHOA NELLIE!" backstops, like hitting a brick wall.

How do strong backsprings and half-stops cause cuts? I am trying to think it through but can't see it.

It takes a lot of force to overcome a strong backspring and once the blade stops at the halfstop if your grip is not great your nail can slip out of the nailnick because of the jerk of the blade going into the halfstop so the blade will stop and your finger will keep going. It also depends on how you use the nailnick too. I hope that cleared things up.

Dont get me wrong, I still love my GEC and halfstops, but I have learned to be far more careful when opening it.
