I recently acquired this beautiful #79 for what I feel is a good price. Stag covers. I have never seen a stag covered knife with one side textured and the other smooth. Also, take a close look at the pins. I assume they are this way due to the contour of the stag handle. One pin seems a little bigger than the others. Anyone ever seen this before? Please let me know if there is somewhere else I should be posting this. Thanks!

The pin issue is normal in that pin placement on this type of knife is inconsistent or simply that way because of the cover.

I have seen natural stage be more smooth. I often put them on a belt and make them that way. Yours does not show any sanding marks on the pins or stag.

Most retailers will show both sides on their Web sites. And...I would never buy a stag knife in the exchange without seeing both sides.

Even on your shield side the stag is smooth near the bolsters.

For me it may be not like most stag but all stag is not created equal.

It is not unusual for the center pin to be larger than others as it also anchors the spring. The 79 is one of my favorite patterns. I have two 79's in stag covers and neither have what I would consider close matches. Part of the charm of stag IMO is the uniqueness. Symmetry of covers is a bigger issue for me than one side being smoother than the other.

I'd be happy with that stag, the bark colours are well matched. Smoothness isn't an issue for me, but everyone has their own personal feelings about stag. For me, I don't like it when it is too fat or asymmetrical in thickness.

As others have said, the pins are normal, though I've heard some complain that GEC puts their pins in too deep.

Thanks guys!!!! Don't get me wrong I think she's a beaut. Just didn't want it to be a mod job on the non show side and not have been warned prior to. Good to know she checks out.
