GEC Tidioute or GEC Northfield? Is there a diff. in fit and finish, quality, ... overall goodness? I just wanna make sure I'm happy with my next EDC option. Prices are close in the ones I'm looking at. This will be my first GEC. (I want a keeper!) Thank you all in advance! Any and all replies/ opinions are welcome. Thnx,MW

Seems that Northfields have more in the way of swedges and fluted bolsters, etc. Both are of equal quality. I have two of each and all are most impressive. I've only received one GEC that went back because the fit and finish wasn't quite right. The knife was near perfect, but one scale was horribly thin and not well fit to the bolster. All of the GEC dealers I've dealt with are very accommodating should you get one that doesn't make you happy when you get it in your hands. Excellent production knives!

I just got my first saturday. A Northfield primitive bone barlow. F&F are excellent. springs are very tight. Acutally, the main blade is a nail buster and I've flirted with sending it back to get that spring worked more to my liking but I'll see how it feels after a bit of pocket time. Overall I'm very happy with my first GEC and it's a keeper for sure :)
I can't speak (yet) of Tidioute but they look good from what I've seen.

As others have said, Northfields have a different shield (the Tidioute one has changed too,it's now an hourglass 'corset' shape, saucy!)and long pull and swedges on the blades.

'Great Eastern' badged models have an acorn shield and offer stainless blades but these seem to be produced in fewer numbers and styles than the Northfiel d or Tidioute both of which use carbon only.

Just got the No.25 Northfield Barlow in Burnt Stag a couple of hours ago. There is NONE more beautiful:D Stiff springs but just right for me, excellent build quality (GE can give a Master Class to any other production manuf in my book) and outstanding International service from River Raisin Knife Co. who have marvellous photos/close-ups of the actual knife you get:thumbup:

Early on (2006 and most of 2007) the only difference was the branding. Starting late last year they made an effort to steer Northfield into a little more refined model with swedge cuts and more of a mirror finish. On the Barlows, many NF's have Sig Bolsters as well.

I was just checking out that primitive bone Barlow ,great looking knife.

Thanks for the info. I have been deciding on my first slippie and decided definitly to go with a GEC possibly the Bone barlow but the Northfield almond(oiled cow bone) scout looks great for 70$ at KSF.

I've been whining on every GEC thread how I want a #25 Barlow in red buffalo or natural bone - you guys make sure you leave one for my wife - er, I mean Santa to pick up for me!

Make sure you celebrate Christmas TWICE by following the Old Style Russian Orthodox calendar...means you get another Christmas 10 days later:D:thumbup:
