Windows....
Everyone knows you have to re-OS once a year but with all the new Reg-Clean programs, do you have to or is it still best just to re-os?

're-OS'? Registry First Aid and Scan Disk (or whatever they call it now) once a week and defrag every month or so. But then I'm not a geek, I miss Win 3.1.

This is probably going to get moved to the appropriate forum (Gadgets & Gear). Everyone knows you have re-OS once a year? I don't agree. Why do you think this? Registry cleaning programs have been around for years. I've had good success with Registry Mechanic. Are you having specific issues with machine?

I concider myself very computer literate but have no idea what re-OS is !!!!!! The puter I'm using is 7 years old running XP pro ,,,, it's never been re-OS'd woteva that is and it runs like a race horse. I delete everything every night,,,, download no music or porn,,,, defrag once in a blue moon,,,,,, usually says this volumn does'nt need defragging.....lol SO what in gawds name is re-OS ?

re-OS means to reformat the drive and reload the operating system.

That is a so last resort thing to do....... never screwed my machine up bad enough to even concider doing that,,,,,,,,,,,, rofl

(i'm actually almost done with the A+ certification right now)

to answer your question, no. appropriate cleaning and it's all good. keep windows, AV, firewall, drivers, etc. up to date, clean the registry, run disk cleanup, scan for adware/spyware/malware, defrag, and you should be good.

One solution to consider is a different OS: Mac OS X. ;)
:barf::p

linux is better:thumbup:

I've got a simpler solution - I just replace the computer no matter what every 4 years. It's cheaper than a single discontinued medium-sized Busse knife. . . or a single Game Warden a year. I can afford that.

damned you had me scared, i thought OS was a secret code for Off Skunk

i use a program called reg clean about once a month, disk cleanup every night, and have my defrag set for once a week at 3am. also good virus with cookie protection.

.

My cookie protection is simple.
Put them out of reach of my son. Done deal!

A fresh install of an OS on a Windows based machine will leave that machine in it's optimum state. Registries get beaten to death with trial programs, new software, updates, etc and sometimes it's nice to re-OS. I've heard good things though about RegClean. If it keeps skunk clean, maybe it's allright after all.

Yep, very happy to run OS X and use VM's (VMware Fusion or Parallels) for my Windows/Linux needs. It's great to be able to just take snapshots of the VM's and roll back easily if things go bad. Those new MacBook Pro's are very nice (unibody enclosure/single piece of solid aluminum). Apple needs to hire Jerry to make one out of INFI.

That said, I still like to format/start fresh when there's a major/new release .... Snow Leopard (10.6.x) sounds like it will be out early. :)

i cross that bridge when i get there, as one already said, its rare i cannot fix problems.

I use OSX at work. The students beat then to death and they still work fine after years of abuse so I would sgree with Lunde as well
I only reformat my windows os when there is a catastrophic occurrence
