Here is a picture of Gelbu on his last journey to Calcutta to buy some horn. The large horns are 35 inches. About right for a 100 inch khukuri.

Gelbu bought 800 KG of horn which followed him back to BirGorkha via truck.

Oh my Gawd!!!!!
And I thought my Buffalo
(Bison Bison) skull was Big!!!! It has a span of 23" between the tips of the horns and _is_ considered a large sized skull.

And 800 Kg.!!!! That's a lot of horn!!!!

Bro, just how much waste does Birghorka have from these horns?
I know the ends are too thin to make handles from. And is the waste sold for inlay work to people who do that sort of thing?

Uncle Bill, how many khukuri handles do you guesstimate will be made from each of the horns Gelbu is holding?

The fella with Gelbu is apparently determined to get his picture taken!

There is a tremendous amount of waste making horn handles. Much more than wood which can be cut into blocks aproximating handle size. With the horn you take what you get and try to work it down to size. Many times the horn will have internal flaws which render is useless. And it can split and crack during working.

My guess is they will use the big horn for big khukuris and probably get four handles from each horn. Guess only. If the luck goes sour you might get only one handle.

I don't know where the wasted horn goes. Much that is salvageable ends up as handles for kagas katnes, kardas and chakmas, and slabs for chirwas.
