A question for anyone who has/has used both a Gelbu Special and an 18" WWII. Which one is the better chopper & better overall?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I have an 18" WWII and a village model in the style the HI Gelbu special is modeled after. The WWII is substantially bigger and heavier, and will serve better for sustained heavy chopping. The Gelbu special is lighter and easier to carry. It is also faster and more nimble. Each is an excellent general-purpose knife. If you need to chop a lot of wood, break padlocks, cut through cars, or lever large rocks out of the ground, take the WWII. If you want to carry it up a steep mountain trail, or engage in a duel with a master of the Bowie knife (God forbid), the GS has an edge.

I only have the WW II blade with the Hanuman handle so I don't know if it would be a fair compareison between it and the G.S.
I do know the G.S. is continueing to grow on me though.I believe it does penetrate better than the 18"AK although it doesn't have the shear power the AK does.

I went and got them for a better compareison of the blades. The G.S. is 12 3/4" long and the WW II Hanuman S. is 11 3/4".The WW II H.S. is a tad wider at about 1 3/4" and is a full 1/16" thinner at 7/16" thick.
Uncle is close to what the fuller thickness is.I get about 0.230" and I know it's a tad less because I don't have the radius attachment on my mic's.I do have to say the Kamis are better with feel and eye than some guys here are with a 1/4 million dollar machine.

Hmmm. Now that's a surprise.I mic'ed the top of the bevels at the sweet spot on both knives and the WW II H.S. is about 0.025" thinner at 0.225.Maybe it's the deep fuller that makes it appear to me that way.

I know it's a kind of lame compareison, but for what it's worth I would pick the G.S. over the Hanuman with the WW blade.Somehow it feels better balanced and more lively. There is only an inch difference between the length and the c/g is about the same.

That's my .02ç

What is the weight difference between the GS and WWII? From what I have gathered the GS is about 2 lbs.

If the blades were put side by side are the forward angles the same? The Sirupati I have seems to have slightly of a forward angle.

There's a line in a song by Mary Chapin Carpenter which says it best:

"I'm a winner either way"

It's great to have such terrific choices! Many thanks to Himalayan Imports for this.
