I came across my grandfathers single edge razor a little while ago. It's called the GEM Junior. The case contains the razor (appears to be solid brass) and a brass razor blade holder. I am not inclined to use it just yet....needs a good cleanin! lol... There was a note in the box from my namesake that reads: "This razor was given me on my 15th birthday 74 1/2 years ago. He signed his name and the date 1/5/86. If my calculations are correct, this thing is about 110 years old.

Anyone know anything about these razors??

Thanks,
Ben

I think your calculations are wrong 2012-1986=26, 26+74.5=100.5. Gems first razor was in 1898 so oldest a Gem could be is 114 years. The big bonus of ownership for this razor is that you actually have what was probably your grandfathers first razor:thumbup: and know the approximate date of purchase, some time in late 1911

A quick Google search came up with this link, but the Gem is still very popular amongst traditional wet shavers

Thanks for the link and the response. Yea, my calculations were off.....I don't do a figurin in my head like i usta.............lol....
On another note....why do they call DE razors wet shaving?? I am going to be looking into a double edge soon. I did read in some of your other posts that new DE razors are not that good??

Thanks again,
Ben

Pretty much all shaving with a razor blade is wet shaving, even the canned goop and cartridge razor.

I have only had one new DE razor, a Edwin Jagger 89L, and it was a great razor, and many people have had great results with Mekur razors, but I find the quality of the vintage razors is better that the new one. Also the vintage razors are brass under the plating, while the newer ones are mostly pot metal.

Great find, especially the note!
I have two of those GEM Micromatics and a third was given to my brother, cool little razors.
