I've had my modified Gen.1 XM-18 for quite some time, but I've never been 100% sure on what steel was used for the blades on these. I'm sure someone here can tell me. I appreciate it.

I'm sure some would like to assist but without photos and more information it is difficult.

I just figured that the Gen. 1 XM's were all made with the same steel. I don't know if the photos will help, but here they are. This knife was modded in couple ways. I don't know who did the work. The Gen. 1 partial liner and scale has been upgraded to a Gen. 2 liner and scale. The lock side Ti has been stonewashed. The hardware has been polished. The blade has been stonewashed and then the hollows have been given a satin finish. The work appears to be very well done. Even though it has been refinished you can still se the R. Hinderer engraving on the blade in the right light. I tried to capture it in the pictures. Anyway, here it is. Any help with what steel the blade may be would be appreciated.

Alright, I wish I could say for certain it is (fill in the blank), but I do not want to tell you inaccurate information.

So, here is what I suggest. Send Rob Orlando an e-mail with the photos you posted here and ask him to assist. His contact information is found by clicking on his name as author of the stickies. I'd also post the link to this thread into the body of the e-mail.

It looks like that knife may have gone in for a "spa treatment" to be refurbished at some point. Asking the maker should give you the best and most informative response. Please be respectful and patient when e-mailing Rob. He is an awesome guy and will respond to you.

The very first Gen.1's were S30V, somewhere in production they switched to Duratech 20CV. Very hard to tell from a picture which one you have, but you'll notice fast enough with sharpening, but I think you don't want to do that..;)

EDIT: Gen.1's should be all S30V, the switch to Duratech was done only on the Gen.2's
