Hello. New to Bladeforums and I can already see that this place rocks with a wealth of info. Looking forward to learning more about everything sharp!

As far as the Hinderer Gen 4 models, has there ever been any releases of the 3 inch version yet? I know that the 3.5" has been out but wondering about the smaller sibling? I know...good luck finding one in any version :P

Thanks
Steve

I am Pretty sure they are being made now , but none have been released yet.

This will be interesting. If you look at the current 3" XM-18 there's not much room around the blade tang/pivot area to put a stop pin. But I'm sure Rick's engineering genius mind will figure something out.
Cheers.

I was wonder the same thing regarding the stop pin placement. Also, given that the gen 4 appears to have a better detent to prevent the blade from opening, I'm wondering if any of the pre-Gen4 3" models ever had an issue with accidental opening? I would think that this wouldn't be as big an issue on a smaller and lighter blade when comparing to a 3.5" blade. Can anyone provide some guidance on this?

I'm trying to see if it would be better to get a Gen4 3" or a Gen3? With the given availability of all Hinderers, if you had an opportunity to get a Gen3 3 inch model, would you get it over a Gen 4? I guess we can't really answer this since the Gen4 3" isn't out yet.

Yes. Heavier blade increases the possibility of an unintentional opening. Can't rewrite the laws of physics.

The Economics answer would be look for a version 3, just look at what has historically happened to values as each ensuing version has released. Each prior version the value doubles and doubles again.

Depends on what you're looking to do and available funds. Own and enjoy as many as you can find and get. There are several things I personally enjoy, I quit the follie of naming my limit many years ago.

The knife shows I attended this past year where there's a Hinderer lottery rarely saw a 3" XM-18. In fact in the last two the CA and NY shows there were no 3" XM-18 at all. I have a XM-18 with a 3" blade I never had problems with the detent. Here it is with a full titanium scales. It's an ultimate everyday carry Hinderer!

Gen4 3'' with Slicer grind would be the ultimate EDC for me.
+1. That would be a killer combo.
I hesitated to get the Strider PT with a slicer grind because I wanted to wait (and hopefully acquire one) for the Hinderer 3" XM-18 slicer.

Agreed, I would only add to that "non-flipper". I'll be on the look out for one of those as soon as they start to be come available.

The Gen4 3" Slicer will make a terrible EDC. I think everyone should stop looking for one and don't even bother:D:D:D

As far as economic value between a gen 3 vs gen 4 goes, I agree that the early models are consistently commanding higher prices. However, the Gen1 and Gen2 are in a different class. I would consider these closer to "custom production builds". These were grind by the man himself. Gen3 are closer to production builds and I understand that Rick outsourced the grinding of the edges. Not that there's anything wrong with this method. His knives are in super high demand, which probably warrants this production method to keep up with the volumes needed to fill orders. Gen4 looks like they have better engineering improvement changes by way of the relocated stop pin and a better detent. Given this enhancement, I would think that the Gen4 should be more sought after "on paper" than the Gen3s. Plus thrown in a production slicer grind and you have even more options. Unless you take into account a full custom build, I would expect that each newer generation would be an improvement of some sorts over the previous. It's standard marketing really...why would you bring out a new build/generation unless it there's some fundamental differences between the new build vs. previous build. New features and enhancements is why we will always be "upgrading". Everybody wants the latest and greatest:thumbup:

Damn man...it's going to be hard to find one. My hunt begins. BTW....I also think that the 3" slicer will be the the perfect set up for me.

The key to value and collectibility is not improvement it is scarcity. The fact that 4 means 3 is done makes 3 scarce and therefor more desirable. As for improvements, mistakes are more valuable. Imagine IF a version 1 had slipped through with Hinderer mis spelled? Bottom line. Love the knife and have the ones you like and can find. My car analogy would be muscle cars, look at the new Camaro or Challenger... improved? Definitely. But give me a choice of a '69 Camaro with a 327 or a COPO ...!

I'm all about analogies today...

I would agree with you to a point but I would say as far as Camaro's go the Gen 1 would be the 1969 and Gen 2 would be the 1979 Z28. Gen 3 would be the 1999 and the Gen 4 would of course be a 2009. What's more collectible? Only time will tell. But I know what I would want for my every day driver. The '69 would stay in the garage and only come out on the weekends while the 2009 would get me to work every day.

I have a '68 396 Big Block. '73 Z28, '01 SS w/LS7. Drive all 3 but very different animal each one.

I like my gen3 then.:D

I felt bad about calling the Gen 3 a 1999 Camaro. It's more like 2009 and the Gen 4 is a 2012!
