Friends,
I'm not a big user of Buck knives but I have had outstanding customer service from the company despite living in the EU and not the US:thumbup:

I've been looking for a small bladed belt-knife,under 3.5" blade and I've come across the Gen 5.I'm most interested in the basic model and I am particularly struck by the horizontal carry sheath, this is really practical when driving or using a bike, no more rib jabbing

Can anybody give a review of the knife and some decent pics please? Is it worth considering? Many thanks.

Regards, W

I haven't seen one yet so can't comment.

However, I'm interested now. Could be a good sheeple friendly knife!

Does anyone have a pic of the sheath? Is it good for horizontal carry? That would be a great plus!

Here's the one I got for my Birthday the other day from my mom... ... It's a Great looking knife... ;) ... I haven't used it yet... I may never use it... ... Only time will tell.... :D

We still teasing eachother, but 154 cpm,and stamped buck, you can not go wrong!
But I share my personal exp with you.The diff between a Buck any many other brand.Buck knife build for a life time.As the little paper says in your future buck box:
"Welcome to the family,if is your first knife you dont really need an other one......."
And they mean it!
But they totally wrong, because after you get the first knife soon is touch your palm, then my friend you most likely will be infected with kind of "buck" disseas, and you feel need to buy more and more........!

The 005GYS has the charcoal handle and a 420HC blade. It came with the horizontal carry nylon sheath - super combo. I've Had mine since February - with the 005RWS 154CM rosewood/brass & leather vertical leather sheath following a month later. It is not as comfortable in use due to the knurling on the sides. I don't like checkered handgun grips, either. The cheaper one is my carry/user - and it still pops hairs off my forearm as well as it did when I took it from the package the first time. I am sure the upgrade steel will keep it's edge longer, but regular 420HC has been great on my other knives - and easily re-edged.

Hope this helps.

Its a awesome knife,I can't believe nobody else has got as excited over a new buck knife release as i did with this one.I can tell you its one of my all time favorites for small fixed blades, and the 420 hc is as good as any of my bg-42 blades so far i've only touched it up,its an unbelievable value to boot!

This certainly looks the business! I like a small belt knife and I hope to get one soon (before the world economy MELTS DOWN aaarggh!)providing I can get reasonable shipping rates to the EU.

I got a 6 pointer tonite, feild dressed him and skinned him out,After all that ,the knife didn't need touching up,still sharp!kudos to buck!

The Gen 5 is on its way from your country, just getting impatient with waiting, really looking forward to it! Thanks to all for persuading me....

Which one did you order?

I was saddened today... finally saw the original 'snakewood' handled 005LE in a dealer's display case. The wood was rather featureless - and had shrunk due to the knife's proximity to the display case's halogen lamp. The brass pins, etc, were slightly proud of the wood's surface. For 1/4 of the price, the 005RWS seems pristine by comparison. Of course, I just returned from Alabama's Gulf Coast, actually having stayed for four days out on the isthmus leading from Gulf Shores west to Fort Morgan, at the mouth of Mobile Bay. Guess which Buck made the trip? The 005GYS pictured earlier in this thread - great seashore hiking companion - washable sheath and SS blade (420HC).

I opted for the basic model because I like the look of its clean lines and nickel plated guard and because that horizontal sheath is VERY appealing as sitting down in a car and being jabbed in the ribs by a knife on your belt is NO joke:eek:

Great choice! Mine made the Gulf Coast trip with no problems. Paranoia had it's way with me - I still washed it with fresh water when I got home. still a hair popper, too. Yeah, my idea of a sheath knife is it's horizontal carry - or sheathed in a pocket (Don't try this with a 120...).

We have CCLs here - and I carried my revolver holstered on my belt infrequently due to it's grip finding a rib! Pocket carry there, too, now. It's all in the sheath/holster - and the 005GYS' is a good one. Let us know what you think of it when it gets there.

Good start to the day:thumbup:

Why? Day off work, yes! And a fine crisp autumn day,one of the last before the Scandinavian darkness that is winter descends:eek:

Anything else? Well, the Gen5 turned up from your country at last and the wait was worth it certainly. really impressed with the knife, it's right up my street, just what I wanted and need. For me,the dimensions are spot-on,it's solid but not cumbersome or bulky, impressively sharp and thin enough for more exacting work. The finish is wonderful, faultless and I admire the black/grey scales and the all nickel guard (not a fan of brass that much,I know this is a heresy to many...) The sheath is safe, well finished and thought out (often good knives are let down by ill-fitting or inappropriate sheathes, not this one!)didn't realize it offers vertical carry as well as the horizontal which I want:thumbup:More small knives should offer horizontal carry.

Friends, we don't want to live in a 1 knife only world but this gem could carry you through most situations it seems to me.Well done BUCK and thanks to the workforce for making a really decent knife at a reasonable price, this model deserves more attention.

And now, I'm off on the bike to the forest with a small day pack with a snack,PSK and my latest knife. Not bad eh? Right:D

Interesting that no one mentioned that Smokey Mountain had the Gen 5 as a show special on Knives Live on Monday night. I ordered the plain model, since all my knives are users. Horizontal carry? I doubt that it's all it's cracked up to be, but if it works for you, wonderful. When in the field, I like my skinning knife taped to the suspenders on my pistol belt, on my left shoulder. During my white water rafting days (as a guide), I always kept a knife taped to my life jacket, upside down, on my left shoulder. That made it readily accessable even under water. Not that I ever needed it in that prediciment, but....... As to the sheath, I'll probably design and whittle out a leather one that is more "me".

I haven't gotten it yet, maybe today or tomorrow, so I'll have to let you know what I think about it. It'll have to "dang good" to beat our my old 118 and 103. And, the 112 on my belt, and the 301 in my pocket.
