I just received my Gen-5 skinner with Rosewood scales from Cabela’s. I ordered the Rosewood thinking it would be either CPM154 or 154CM there is nothing to say it is a Cabela’s exclusive so I thought it was a typo in the description. The Buck site and all the reviews that have the Rosewood are with one of the upgraded steels. Well not the Cabela’s Rosewood, it is the standard 420HC and it is one of the few descriptions that are correct. I called Buck and these were made to Cabela’s spec. It would be nice if there was some sort of standard.

It really is my fault, the Cabela’s description does say 420HC but does not say “exclusive” or anything to that nature so I though it was a typo. Over thinking just cost me shipping and return postage. I am only looking to add the upgraded steel’s. I have 150+ knives, not all Buck, and if I don’t make some guide lines the house will be full and I will be sleeping in the yard; and it’s snowing so that’s not good!

Moral of the story: if does not say it in print, DON’T TAKE THE CHANCE.

This is just to share and maybe stop another BF member from making the same mistake I did.

Thanks for reading this.

That is annoying for sure!

Mind you, I have a standard GEN 5 in Blackwood and I've found it to be a VERY versatile and useful knife, would not part with it actually.

All you'll get from Buck these days is S30V. A good steel, but Buck's tests (probably optimistic) show that its only about 40% better at holding an edge than 420HC.

So you could skin less than half of a deer more with S30V. Not a big deal.

The 420HC with the BOS heat treat is superior to other 420HC and it's a real steel not a powder steel.

I'd say you have a great knife.

The knife is fine, it’s actually a good size for hunting/skinning and I am not saying that there is any thing wrong with 420HC. I just have to use something to narrow down my accumulating and I chose steel type as my guide. However I would not have paid more just to get Rosewood.

Well if thats your guide,be advised that most super steels from other companies aren't heat treated by Paul Bos,also keep in mind that Bucks 420 hc will outperform lots of other high end steel on other brands, its all in the heat treat man!

I experienced similar difficulty ordering a knife advertised with premium steel blades. I will not mention names or the knife because they all cooperated admirably to correct the problem. After the first supplier sent me 12C27M I returned it and went with another supplier who sent the same thing. Finally, I ordered from a third (and verbally verified it to be 154CM) and they sent me 12C27M. All three advertised ATS-34 or 154CM premium steel but had neither in inventory thus highlighting a marketing problem across the board. Having said that I kept the third knife with 12C27M Bos and called it good enough; actually, very good.
