Gentlemen,

I have a Gene Ingram fire steel that I need a little advice on. I've used the fire steel once and it's now very "sticky" in the leather holster. Any product that can smooth it out without hurting the fire starting capability? Here's the fire steel (it's enclosed in a plain leather sheath):

[Removed link to nonsupporting retailer, please don't deal spot as it is against the rules.]

The sheath looks like this one:

Thanks!

rub some wax on the firesteel. That should fix the 'sticky' problem. If it does not, call 'ole Gene and tell him to send you another. Heck, might as well get another knife too, they are addictive!!

The more you use the fire steel, the smaller the diameter will eventually become. A bit of wax as said or a small drop of oil will fix the issue. The alternative would be to pull the fire steel with the cord provided, you won't hurt anything.

Firesteels have a protective coating and that has to be scraped off before use .Most now are chinese made and there is a website for them somewhere which explains various details of the tool. You are going to use it I hope.Mine is one of the newer types and produces a huge shower of sparks !!

Good to know about scrapping the coating off - yes, I do plan on using it. In the mean time, a little coconut oil fixed it right up. Now it moves freely in its holster.

Don't scrape all the coating off 360, it helps protect the rod from corroding. Inly scrape the part you need.
