Recently I got a folder with rather unpleasant garish stag scales, they have a distinct salmon pink tinge! Can anybody suggest a safe ageing process or similar? How about a few weeks of intense sunlight or does stag crack/blister?
Here in Scandinavia, Elk is hunted a lot (what you call moose)but I haven't heard
of elk antler being used for handles, any reason for this and what type of deer is used for 'stag' scales?
Also, I got hold of an old sunfish knife in good order but I need advice on two points:It has white bone scales and either oil or brass corrosion is giving it a greasy blackened look where the scales touch the liner, can this be cured or halted? The brass pins that hold the scales on are a bit rough and are proud of the handle, how can I smooth them safely? With a soft buffer? I daren't hammer them with a planisher as I fear cracking the bone(not a very good workman or aimer..) Thanks for your attention.
