General Camillus questions

I have had the impression that Camillus knives were of a somewhat lower quality than Buck, Gerber, Case, etc. I see that I may have been incorrect in this, as Camillus seems to have quite a following. I'm not really sure where I got this idea, but I'd welcome any comments, since I find that Camillus has some attractive designs.

Also, I believe that I read here that Western Knives are a Camillus company. Therefore I have a few questions about them as well. The Case XX bowie and the Western bowie are pretty similar looking. Are they also similar in heft, blade design etc.? The Western is also priced at slightly over half of the price of the Case. Also, would the Western handle, being wood, be more durable than the plastic Case handle?

Responses to any or all of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Biff

Some of the models have specific requirements, such as cost, that are specified by large buyers. So you end up with models that look like they were stamped out of tin. In other words, Camillus has a broad range of models, so your previous perception was probably influenced by the low end of the range.

Biff,
I understand your past impression of CAMILLUS, we have for the last 120 or so years produced, for our own branded names, mainly solid, dependable, working knives at an excellent value. With the introduction of the CUDA line of knives a couple of years ago, CAMILLUS has also begun to produce some 'higher end' knives that are of the quality and feature level that seem to interest more of the members of bladeforum, and high performance cutlery users in general. Look for that trend to continue:grin:

We still produce ALOT of solid traditional knives that are excellent values. They are the 'bread and butter' of our line and the lines of knives we produce for other companies[ Remington, Sears, BoyScouts, etc.], but we are increasing the number of more modern, high performance knives that we produce.

On the subject of the WESTERN ww49 Bowie. Its an American Classic! I would rather not get into a direct comparison with one of its competitors, as that would be in poor taste of me, but I believe that the WESTERN BOWIE is an excellent performer in its price range. We have great confidence in the stabilized rosewood scales' strenght and durability.

Thanks for your interest, and if you would like a catalog, just email Wendy at camcut2@aol.com . She will be glad to send you our new full color catalog out.

Thanks very much for your reply. I appreciate the fact that you don't want to comment on your competitor's products

. I also find it exciting that I have access to people like yourself that can, and are willing to rationally discuss these types of questions. I had seen a Camillus USMC-type knife a few years back, and it didn't seem to be finished as well as the Ka-Bar (which I bought, and which also cost more). However, I have also spoken to people who hold your products in high regard.

I posted a question on the General Blade Forum asking for recommendations for a "big" knife, particularly a bowie style, and the Western seemed to get good marks. I will probably buy one.

Here's another question. Is it pronounced CAM-il-lus or Cam-MIL-lus? I have always used the second pronunciation.

Thanks again,
Biff

Biff,

One of the most frequently asked questions in general, and you are the first to ask it here on bladeforums that I know of....

Thanks again for the interest!
