I've been poking around trying to catch up on several years of missed models. I came across several Samshers made by Murali that are some of the finest looking knives I've ever seen on these pages. Just flawless work. I remember hearing about Murali way back when but have never owned his work.

The only possible critique I would have is that they are averaging 3 pounds, still I'd love to get one of the heavier ones. The very first Samsher was a 17" and about 27 oz. IIRC and I missed it. #2 was a 20" and 40 oz. and I managed to jump on it. Both by Sgt. Kadkha. Later both Sgt. Khadka and Bura made them in 18" and 29 oz. size, with the only difference being that Bura used a habaki bolster.

I see several sold last November and December by Murali (one was 40 oz.) and can't believe how good they look. Perfect standard bolsters, glowing wood, straight cut handle rings, and excellent blades.

As a general comment, I have to say I think the scabbards have improved overall as well. They've always been good, but this new crop are really neatly done, or maybe the leather is just smoother looking. Of course, HI has always worked to improve their offerings...!

P.S. Check out this thread for a pic I posted of a Bura Samsher in 2006. (Post #16 in the thread). This one had a satin finish and chandan handle (and by the way I recall the day of the week it was sold, a Monday in March 2005 as Aunt Yangdu laid her finger open with it and Uncle Bill posted about her "industrial accident". It was a sharp one! I still have the little note she wrote warning me about it being a "biter". :D See the link in Post #9.)

It's the new Sarki, Norm.
His name is Sagar and he does some very nice work.

Norm, I have three Murali's. A 12.5" GRS/BC, 16" WWII, and a 16.5" CAK. The WWII is around 1/2" at the shoulder:eek:. It's thicker than the CAK. It weighs about 26 oz., while the CAK only weighs 29. They're both great and I just love the little GRS/BC(it's 16 oz.). I like his work a lot. That said, as my Murali WWII shows, he can overbuild when he wants to. All three of his blades have a great feel, and balance well. Also, I agree that sarki Sagar is raising the bar on leatherwork. The quality of khuk and sheath seems very high these days, not that it was ever low to my knowledge. Just especially good now. Take care.
