General home heat treat question...

I used to use old motor oil to guench my 5160 blades. It seemed to work OK but it smoked the house up and left a layer of burnt on crud that was extra work to clean off. Now I have an old milk can with eight gallons of olive oil in it for quenching. It hardly smokes and the knives dont't get that burnt on residue. I just wash them with soapy water and they're ready to temper.

Olive oil rules!

Really, don't use old motor oil! It exhausts extremely toxic fumes. There is, besides other dangerous stuff, lots of dioxine in them. It stinks, too. Use olive or other vegetable oils. Peanut oil works well, too. Smells like you are making french fries when hardening.
