Way back in 2007 I bought an Ultratech, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! I showed it to all my friends and they all loved it. A couple year later I lost it and was very upset and I have wanted another one ever since. So in April of last year I discovered BF and other forums looking for Ultratechs and I was taken in by the wonderful world of knife collecting! So many knives so little money, in just a short 9 months I had spent nearly 20k on knives....buying, selling, trading, it had become an obsession!
Fast forward to today I had downsized my collection quite a bit. After watching all the new models come out from Blade Show and all the makers coming out with new knives you realize that this is not going to stop...too many knives coming out and not enough money. Having spent 20k in knives and I still only got my hands on a fraction of the knives I wanted to hold, touch, caress.....admire. When is this nonsense going to end I ask myself, ZT will keep making LE's, Blade Show will happen every year and Jim Skelton will keep making reviews. Eventually the knife market bubble is going to burst, knives are not a perishable good!! Knives are meant to last forever, as long as they keep making them there will be just way to many models and makers out there to choose from, values will go down and the market will be flooded with to many choices. The XM-18 is a "lifetime" knife, as long Hinderer keeps making them the market will become over saturated and values will go down, simple economics.
The phone call that made me cringe. Earlier this year I called a guy because we wanted to trade some custom knives, so he asked me about mine and I told him it was mint and that I cut some paper to test sharpness. He then stated to tell me about his knife very passionately....I mean this kid sounded like a freakin pedophile!! He also asked my permission to cut paper with his knife before he sent it to me. I said yea, sure, whatever and his response was "mmmmm....yeah.....ooohhhh...thanks man" in the most sickening, child raping tone, I wanted to take a long shower after. I was just so turned off by the whole conversation and disgusted I did not want to go through with the deal. Anyway, if this is any indication of young knife collectors then I want no part in this! I can only imagine the kid jerking off to cutting paper after our phone call!
There are only so many blade styles, handle materials, and blade steels to serve a specific need. Eventually every possible style combination will have been created and there will be nothing really new to make, I predict in a few years this will come to fruitation.
