I am going to do a series of videos on general preparedness. I always like to do some basic skills stuff on a regular basis. I think it helps to keep you sharp. This first part is on some gear selection for a day hike. I know this may be below a lot of peoples skill level. But, I will try to keep it interesting. I am goin to try not to focus on gear. I am going to focus on how to use your selected gear and basic bushcraft/survival skills in conjunction.

I hope to do the videos in this order:

General Preparedness Day Hike Part 1
General Preparedness Day Hike Part 2
General Preparedness Overnight Hike Part 1
General Preparedness Overnight Hike Part 2
General Preparedness 3 Day Hike Part 1
General Preparedness 3 Day Hike Part 2

Anyway here is the first installment.

I really like the neck knife contents under the inner tube piece - excellent idea

Awareness, basic preps and basic knowledge. All three are vital for anyone going off the hard road.

Thanks for the good info, and the videos.

Do you carry more FAK items?

Even for day hikes (especially in winter), I like to carry lots of moleskin, aspirin, band-aids, alcohol wipes, bug juice, sun block, tick remover/tweezers, and water purifier tablets cause I'm turning into a wussy :D

I've also moved from flashlights to packing waterproof headlamps. Leaves my hands free to carry all my FAK crap :p - actually it's from all the late evening fly fishing trips where I have to walk back in the dark and try to find my truck :o

Great video. Looking forward to the series. Nice kit

My most used items for a day hike.

1. Nalgene canteen/Platy bag.
2. Hat, type is seasonal.
3. Golite Poncho.
4. Gloves for winter.
5. Bug spray.
6. Sun screen.
7. Map and compass if on a new trail.
8. Headlamp as sometimes get back late. Rebel EOS or Fenix HL20 but got others.
9. Fleece jacket if weather and elevation changes calls for one.
10. Cell Phone.
11. Something to snack on.
12. Sun glasses. When combined a wide brimmed hat keeps the bugs off big time.

Some stuff I pack but don’t use often.

1. Ti Kettle.
2. FAK.
3. Fixed blade knife. Kinda like my Mora knives but naturally have other types.
4. Extra single cell flashlight.
5. Extra socks.
6. AMK Thermolite Bivy.
7. Backpacking stove though this is used for winter coffee if in the mood. Not really a needed and often not packed.
8. 3 ways to start a fire. Fire steel, Bic and matches with cottonballs/Vaseline combo.
9. 50 feet of paracord.
10. Whistle and mirror.
11. Somekinda water filter or tabs. I got a bunch of this stuff so kinda wing it.
12. TP.

There must be more but this is all that comes to mind at 11 pm Saturday night.

If I don’t have my full daypack aka fishing trip or very short hike I take this little green bag of survival goodness.

All the basics covered in one little UL bag. Seems the bigger the kit the less likely it will actually be on hand if needed. So having something very small and UL is kinda good I think.

Most of the time for a solo day hike I don't carry much more first aid stuff. My load out changes a lot when I am with other people in the woods. When I started this series I kinda wanted to stay real basic. I have several head lights, and usually carry one. Glad you liked the video.

few little things I find handy (to the ones already mentioned)

is a sit/torso pad- I've found some really thin closed cell foam that packs very tightly and only weighs a couple of oz

a Buf has replaced the venerable bandana in my kit, I use the syn one in the "summer" and the merino one in the "winter"

I use sunglasses that have changeable lenses (Smith) and keep a pair of clear lenses in my bag- if it's cloudy and I'm doing any woods work they go on as safety glasses

a small folding saw makes into my bag- @ 3 oz it more than carries it's weight

Hey
Great video,very informative.
One question, might be my laptop but
is there any way you can raise the audio on the next one?
I have this thing at full blast but kinda hard to hear.
(might be I need new batteries in my hearing aide too ;) )
Looking forward to the next one
thanks!

What kind of bag is that ? Is it a Maxpedition Remora GearSlinger Pack Nylon With some other little pouch on top ? Looks like a nice bag, how does it work out for you ? Pretty roomy yet small ?
