I have been charged with designing a general purpose hunting knife. Has anyone any ideas. It would be used on game such as goats, deer (Fallow to Sambar) and pigs to field dress, sometimes skin, quartering (to pack meat out) and camp duties. Blade would need a bit of belly, some point, be around 4-1/2" in blade length (point to ricasso), be full tang with integral guard.

Some task hey!

That's asking a lot from one knife! Maybe 1/8 to 3/16" thick, high hollow ground, drop point, 440C blade? Lanyard hole in the handle. And thumb grooves for better control. Maybe a finger choil? And Micarta handles.

Do we get a commision for our input? :D

CS Master Hunter is a modern classic, IMHO. Others that come to mind are the Fallkniven F1 and H1, Roselli erapuukko (hunting knife), any of the several Loveless-derived drop-points, Dozier blades, Scagel designs, Cold Steel's discontinued Red River elk skinner and North American Hunter models, Buck's skinner... whew! I could go on but there are lots of other opinions out there as to blade designs, steels, grinds, handle materials... Have fun!

No commission. But whoever gives me the best advice I'll name the knife after him/her. Deal?

Check out some of the swamprats. A lot of quality for the money. A battlerat would probably be too big for your needs. A howling rat or bandicoot should fit the bill nicely! I wouldn't rule out a camp tramp either.

Ross Seyfried did a feature article about hunging knives in Guns & Ammo, December 1999. If you can find it, it's a good article. He currently writes for Wolfe Publishing. He probalbly takes more game in a season than any of us will in a lifetime.

His recommendations were: Drop point, smooth edge, 4" or less, razor sharp, with a bit of tooth.

BTW, the Spyderco Moran Drop Point fits this category.
