The subject comes up pretty regularly.

Generally, somebody is looking for recommendations of a fixed blade knife, and the discussion begins with questions about what they are going to use it for, what they want to pay, and so on, intermixed with a couple recommendations for this or that ESEE, Condor, and whatever have you.

This is not that thread.

I want to know what you think is the knife with the widest possible range of uses.

I'm deliberately leaving the question vague.

Honestly I use all my knives the same, whether its prying something, opening a beer, cutting something I know I shouldn't. But I like the question, and for me I find fixed blades more useful than folders. Folders are convenient and easier to carry mostly, but the strength of a fixed blade is un matched by any folder. Just today, I stabbed some duct work to start a hole so I could trim it out. Any knife I have on me is fit for duty :)

Benchmade 162. You can slice, dice, baton, disembowel, chop, the spine is thick enough to hammer in tent stakes, you can carve pumpkins, is somewhat sheeple friendly, has a nice sheath with a firestarter rod holder. Its the most versatile knife I own.

Modern-style clip-point bowie with a 9-10" blade.

If I can have a second knife, or as a second choice, it will be a 3-4" drop point fixed blade.

I feel a small fixed blade able to be easily carried is the most versatile. Anything from bk11/14 Izula sized up to a BHK Woodsman Pro. 2-4 inch blades allow for legal carry mostly everywhere making them more likely to be used!

I agree 100% with KOD. Love my 162!

Esee 3. Legal most places. Can skin, slice, cut, will baton within reason. The pommel will break up ice. Blade is wide enough to flip a burger. The knife is easily carried due to its compact size and is light weight.

Could not have said it any better myself!
